Southwest Flight Attendant Offers Funny Spin On Preflight Speech

Flying can be stressful and even terrifying for some people, but laughter can go a long way to ease people's minds. In some rare cases, flight attendants use humor very effectively to improve the experience and relieve the boredom of the obligatory safety speech before takeoff. A hilarious speech by a Southwest flight attendant took place on a flight that was heading to Islip, New York, and many people were laughing on the plane. Needless to say, it's gotten incredible viral success online with over 14 million views.

A recent Southwest flight featured a full-fledged comedy standup routine integrated into the safety talk. Luckily, one of the passengers took out his phone and recorded the show on his smartphone, and it can be viewed online.

People who fly regularly probably know the safety speech well enough to recite it from memory. Unfortunately, this probably leads to people not even paying attention to the safety guidelines.

At the beginning of the video, you see a flight attendant named Robert Baker beginning the standard safety speech by introducing the crew, then he goes right into his standup routine. He begins by explaining the seatbelt procedure, and he jokes about how simple the procedure is. He also mentions that the belts should be "low and tight," and he mentions that he will be wearing a pair of hot pink Speedos in the same fashion later in the evening.

He continued with the comedy in regards to the use of the life vests by describing the events of needing the vests as turning the plane into a cruise ship if it should happen to crash land in the ocean. He also compared the appearance of the vest to a toilet seat cushion. He adds that, if they should end up in a body of water, the crew could be found by the fact that they'll be toting the liquor kit.

It's somewhat amazing to notice during the video that the other crew members seem completely unfazed by the jokes while the passengers are laughing heartily. When Robert gives the information about smoking, he jokingly suggests that the smoking area is on the wings of the plane, and passengers could enjoy the show by watching "Bye Bye Birdie" and "Gone With the Wind." Apparently, he was not fond of smoking on the plane. Robert also humorously suggested that people do not engage in any questionable activities with their webcams in the bathrooms.

Robert has been on the job since 2005 for Southwest Airlines as mentioned here by Yahoo! News, and it seems that he has been making passengers laugh for many years. He ends the presentation with a song sung to the tune of the theme from Barney the Dinosaur. The comments from passengers seemed positive, and one person said it was the best flight the traveler ever had.
