Chris Cornell, Soundgarden's frontman, would have turned 56 this week. In honor of Cornell’s birthday on Monday, his estate shared one of his previously unreleased covers — an acoustic rendition of Guns N’ Roses 1989 song Patience. Cornell originally recorded the track in Los Angeles back in 2016.

In a statement released alongside the newly released recording, Cornell’s widow Vicky celebrated her late husband while also sharing details about the newly released track.

“One of Chris’s engineers recently reminded me of Chris’s recordings from sessions in 2016, which he still had. ‘Patience’ was one of them,” Vicky Cornell wrote on Monday. “That recording was inspired by our daughter Toni, who was a huge GNR fan and asked her dad to teach her to play it on the guitar. His cover is so hauntingly beautiful; it brought it all back in a rush of bittersweet memories.”

Vicky also wished her late husband a happy birthday, writing: “The memory of your smile still makes my heart, broken as it is, beat as fast as the first time we met. We love you Chris, Happy Birthday.”

Rolling Stone also reports that Cornell’s children, Toni and Christopher, have paired Monday’s announcement with a new initiative to address addiction, an educational pilot program called “Stop The Stigma.” The educational campaign is a partnership between the Chris and Vicky Cornell Foundation and the Addiction Policy Forum.

According to Rolling Stone, Toni and Christopher released a statement to announce the new initiative that explains the new program as a program that “empowers young people to tackle the stigma around addiction and teaches teens the science of substance-use disorders, prevention, and that addiction is a disease and a mental-health issue, and not a moral flaw.”

“Stop The Stigma” will also be paired with a podcast, which “will explore how stigma is hampering our efforts to combat addiction, what actionable steps can be taken to address this issue, and more,” according to the organization’s website.

With hundreds of thousands of views and nearly a thousand comments on YouTube as of July 21, the previously unreleased song — along with the announcement — have certainly attracted fans’ attention. Countless users on YouTube mourned Cornell’s loss while also celebrating the singer’s talents.

“This feels like this might be a missing piece, knowing that Chris checked himself out. Though it's a cover it feels like his soul speaking, the pain is there and the loneliness. Chris was real. Chris is real. Rest in peace brother,” one user wrote.

Cornell, who passed at the age of 52 back in 2017, was the frontman of Soundgarden and Temple of the Dogs. As Rolling Stone describes him, the grunge singer was “marked by his impressive multi-octave vocal range that displayed a rare sensitivity within heavy music.” Soundgarden’s most well-known songs include Black Hole Sun, Spoonman, Fell On Black Days, Outshined, and Burden In My Hand.
