The Alaskan wilderness can be brutal, in both winter or summer, and your survival can depend on your survival skills. Sometimes, even the best prepared residents in Alaska need a little help or to be rescued when things go wrong. Recently 30-year-old Tyson Steele, who moved to Alaska, traced out a giant SOS message in the snow in the hope of attracting attention in order to get rescued.

The Utah native was indeed rescued, but it was his family that sent help his way after not hearing from him for several days, reports the NZ Herald. A series of unfortunate events occurred that led to him waiting to be rescued for 23 days. The man ultimately braved brutal conditions in the Alaskan wilderness during those 23 days and was understandably relieved when he saw a rescue helicopter flying overhead.

It all began when the house he was living in caught fire, and despite his best efforts to extinguish the fire it raged, burning down the home he just bought and leaving him without any shelter, fuel, or food supplies. Not only that, the man’s beloved dog and companion, Phil, died in the blaze, confirms Time.

With no way to communicate with the outside world, no clothing, food, supplies, or a mode of transportation, he got to work erecting the best structure for shelter that he could with what he had available to him, according to a report issued by the Alaska State Troopers. Burned tin cans were pulled from the wreckage, and he foraged as best as possible.

When his family didn’t hear from him after several days they requested a welfare check knowing that he was at least 20 miles from the nearest person. Rescuers immediately recognized the international sign for help carved out into the snow beside his shelter. And before long they witnessed the stranded resident below them, grateful to be found before the worst of the long winter months completely cut him off.

Do you think you could survive 23 days in the Alaskan wilderness?
