Thirty-seven-year-old Staff Sgt. Alfred Brazil lost his battle with stage 4 rectal cancer in July 2017. Kait Brazel, Alfred's wife, and sons Mylon and Mason were left behind to mourn the loss.

In the weeks leading up to Alfred's death, both his parents did all that could be done to prepare them for the inevitability of losing their father.

Brazel took his final breath only five months after his diagnosis. He was buried at the National Cemetary in Arlington, Virginia.

Kait explained while talking to 'Today' about her husband's illness that the couple never addressed it with sadness. Kait said this represented their family attitude. She said the Brazel's will always live every moment of life to its fullest potential.

Four months had passed after the death of her husband when Kait and her sons decided to visit the Arlington National Cemetary. The date was November 20, 2017, and the drive took 24 hours from their home in Colorado Springs.

The visit was not a happy one but included moments the mother would never forget.

Kait said the family brought a blanket with them. Not long after the family reached the gravesite, Mylan said he could feel the presence of his father. He also said he wanted to take a nap.

Kait explains after Mylan lie down before the tombstone to nap with his father, Mason lie down next to his brother and began to pray. The proud mother said she could not help the tears that escaped the corners of her eyes.

Kait explained it was sad to see her sons talk to their father without a response. However, she said the moment let her know that the way Alfred approached the subject of his death with them was the right choice. Our goal was to make sure they lost none of their innocence while being as realistic as possible with them.

The proud mother says she knew her and her late husband's mission was accomplished when she saw her boys sharing the details of their lives with the headstone of their father. It was even necessary for Mylan to turn once more to hug the headstone as the family turned to leave.

Kait says being open and honest with them prepared them for the challenges they now face. She says the couple never sugarcoated the prognosis for their father with the two boys. He was their father, she explains, and they fought side by side with him.
