In the classic 1951 film A Streetcar Named Desire, Blanche DuBois declares that she has always depended on the kindness of strangers, and her sentiment lives on till today.

Satharith By has lived the American Dream. Originally from Cambodia, Satharith came to the United States as a refugee in the 90s, searching for a better life for his family. The By family quickly settled into their new life, living in Southern California where Satharith opened a donut shop.

When his wife became severely ill, Satharith faced a huge problem paying for her medical bills, forcing him to sell his shop to a family member. When his wife recovered, the family moved to Missouri City, Texas. Undeterred by his earlier setback, Satharith opened a new shop, Billy’s Donuts, which he named after his son.

Satharith works at his new business with the same determination that he had in his younger days. Each morning, Satharith wakes up at 2 a.m., preparing his shop for the business of the day. Despite all of his hard work, Satharith became discouraged as he got very few customers in the last few weeks.

Seeing his father struggling, Billy became intent on doing anything he could to make the business a success. Posting pictures of his discouraged-looking father, the empty parking lot, and the numerous cases of uneaten donuts on Twitter, Billy encouraged his friends to stop by the shop.

Little did he know just how big of an impact his tweet would have on the business.

Billy initially thought that his post would be shared a couple of times by his friends, but the response was overwhelming. Billy’s tweet sent shockwaves in the Missouri City area, being retweeted over 336,000 times. With business booming, Satharith eventually ran out of donuts to sell to his legions of new customers.
