Son Reunited With Mother 21 Long Years After He Was Abducted By His Father

A mother's long anguish turned to joy when she was finally reunited with her missing son.

Steven Hernandez was only 18 months old when he was taken from his home in Rancho Cucamonga, California in 1995. For his entire life, Steven had been told by his father that his mother had abandoned him.

The truth was that Steven's father, Valentin Hernandez, had actually abducted the toddler and taken him away to Mexico. Steven's mother, Maria Mancia, had returned home one day to find both Valentin and Steven missing.

In the beginning, Maria had believed that her home had been robbed. However, once she realized that all of her boyfriend's belongings and personal identifying paperwork were missing, she knew that he had actually taken the toddler.

Maria was desperate to find her son. She begged Valentin's family to provide her with information. But years went by and nobody could help.

Throughout the years, the distraught mother clung to one single black and white photo of her son. It was her lifeline and it never left her side.

Finally, in 2016, Maria's luck changed.

“Some detectives came to my house, and at first I was scared because I didn’t know what was going on, but then they told me they found him. They found Steven,” she told the San Bernardino Sun. 

He had been found in Puebla, Mexico. What was more amazing was that investigators from the San Bernardino District Attorney’s Office had matched the DNA of Steven to Maria's DNA. 

Steven had taken the DNA testing thinking that it would help find his father who had since gone missing. Instead, he found out that he had a mother who was desperate to find him back in California.

After 20 years of being separated, the mother and son were reunited in 2016 in San Bernardino. Steven was able to look into his mother's face and wipe away her tears of joy.

Because he is an American citizen by birth, Steven plans to stay in the country with his mother and pursue a law degree.
