Son Discloses Mom Used 'Husband In Training' Course To Make Him & His Brothers Better Spouses

They say chivalry is dead, but the mother of one TikToker wasn't having any of it.

Doug Weaver, who goes by the handle @dougweaveraert, posted a video on TikTok explaining his mother's "husbands in training" curriculum that she invented for him and his two brothers while they were growing up. He said the courses began when he was a child and covered everything from common courtesy to respect for women and even eating habits.

"When I was a kid, my mom did this thing for me and my two older brothers called 'husbands in training.' It was a full, multiple-level curriculum on how to be a better husband," he said in the clip.

"There were things like what to do if your spouse says something and the information they give is wrong. How to handle it if they say something wrong in public versus in private, when it is appropriate to correct them and when it isn't. We talked about consent, we talked about the basics of respecting and honoring women and listening to women and all of the things that really just make you a decent human being."

Weaver said the curriculum influenced his entire life and his father even joined the "program" when he was in high school after he realized he himself hadn't learned these lessons.

"She wanted us to know how to be in a healthy long-term relationship, and in the meantime, we could practice by treating every woman we meet with respect, starting with her. We weren't only expected to learn it, we had to show her that we knew it."

And the cherry on top?

"My mom even made certificates of completion that she signed and gave to each of us on our wedding day," Weaver said.

With all three brothers now married, Weaver said their wives are grateful for the lessons they learned:

"I gotta say, my brothers and I are all married and I think all three of our wives really appreciate the hard work that my mom did trying to raise some decent men."

Weaver's wife told Buzzfeed, "my family and I all marveled, and perhaps poked a little fun, at Doug's table etiquette. We had never seen anyone cut a pork steak so slowly and delicately. That was when he first told me about 'husbands in training,'" adding "his mother taught him the foundations of how to treat others, how to be himself without guilt or shame, and how to live every moment to the fullest."

Now the proud father of a son, Weaver said he would impart the lessons he learned to his child:

"I'm definitely raising my son to understand how consent works and that the necessity for consent doesn't end when you get married. … Identifying when women are in distress or in danger because of other men … Healthy conflict resolution and how to express your feelings in a healthy way and appropriate ways to respond when someone expresses their feelings to you."

The video has attracted the admiration of the online community, drawing 1.5 million likes and more than 51,500 comments.

"Online course info? Asking for a friend who I call my husband," read one comment.

"Can u please make this an actual course we can purchase? If a man would like to date us they shud show they passed," read another.
