Son, 11, Cries After Seeing His Mom In Her Wedding Dress: ‘I’m So Happy For You’

A bride's 11-year-old son was overcome with strong emotions after seeing his mother in a wedding dress for the first time. 

Cameras captured Mekhi Sheffield breaking down in tears as he walked towards his mother, Sommer Jean, who was getting ready for her wedding ceremony. The clip of the young boy and his mom was shared on TikTok on Jan. 9, 2023, by Thomas Adrianna, the mother's hairstylist. It has gone viral since the upload, generating over eight million views, 2.4 million likes and more than 50,000 comments. 

The mom was getting married to Jeff Jean, whom she met online in May 2021. He proposed to her on Thanksgiving Day in 2022, in front of his future bride's family and her son. In an exclusive with Today, Sommer said that her son had been slowly opening up to his future stepfather since the engagement.

For a long time, Sommer and her son had it rough together. She was a single mother who gave birth to Sheffield right out of college. She was also in some emotionally abusive relationships and her son was a witness to her unhappiness for many years.

In another interview with Good Morning America, Sheffield said he was hesitant about getting close to Jeff because of his mother's past relationships. He was not trying to get attached to him but then Jeff made an effort to do nice stuff with him and his mother.

On the other hand, Sommer didn't force her son and Jeff to get close right away. She figured any man who would treat her son like his own would be the man she could spend the rest of her life with. The moment Jeff showed effort with her son, she knew she was ready to marry him.

In the viral video, Sheffield told his mother that she looked very pretty in her wedding dress, and then he could no longer hold back the tears. His mother briefly hugged him and asked if he was crying happy tears, to which Sheffield told his mom, in between sobs:

"I'm so happy for you."

Sheffield told Good Morning America that moments of his mother's struggles with her previous relationships replayed in his mind when he saw her in her wedding dress. And then a realization hit him, which was why he was in tears.

"Wow, we've really been through a lot and now we are finally here."

Sommer said that her son was able to hold it together moments before she had to walk with him down the aisle. Then he started to cry again when he saw Jeff at the front of the church, waiting for his bride.

Sheffield was also a boy who longed to have a complete family, after years of wondering why his friends and classmates had two parents. Now, he finally has someone to call “dad.” 

Meanwhile, Adrianna and Sommer were not expecting to receive such an overwhelming response to the 11-year-old boy’s viral video and it has made the bride's wedding day even more special. Sommer said that her son was usually not the type of boy who could cry in public but this was not a usual circumstance as he had never seen his mother so blissful before.

Adrianna also shared more photos from the couple’s wedding night that showed it was indeed a grand celebration and a dream come true for the bride, the groom and their son.
