Some Think The United States Should Adopt New Italian Law That Now Requires Alarms On Children's Car Seats To Prevent Abandonment

It's shocking, but some people in this world will still leave their young children in cars alone, and on hot days. While some of the horrific incidents are accidental and the result of parents forgetting that their children were in the backseat, many instances of this happening stem from parents simply wanting to run their errands in peace.

It should go without saying that it is never alright to leave a young child unattended, but this is especially true when it comes to leaving children in cars. Even with a window cracked open, the design of a car can create a furnace effect. Even on mild or warm days, the sunlight beating down on the metal roof can create something not wholly unlike a sauna inside the vehicle.

After multiple cases of infants and toddlers dying of heatstroke from being left in hot cars, Italian lawmakers decided that enough was enough, as reported here at CNN. They implemented a new decree that requires all carseats to be equipped with audio and visual alarms that will alert passersby if a child is unattended in a vehicle. Furthermore, the alarm will send notifications to the parents' cellphones.

Parents who choose to ignore this decree and use a traditional car seat will be subject to hefty fines. Furthermore, if a parent is caught ignoring the law multiple times, they risk losing their driver's license.

Many are enthusiastic about the prospect of a similar law being implemented in the United States. Amber Rollins, a spokesperson for the anti-car death advocacy group Kids and Cars, told NBC News that she was a huge proponent of America also requiring these modern car seats.

"[The] technology [is] already available," Amber said, calling it "unconscionable" that America wasn't immediately following in Italy's footsteps.
