Skinny Stray Dog Sees Open Car Door And Immediately Decides To Jump Into Front Seat

May 29, 2019 by apost team

Bill Shaver was driving back home to Missouri after a fishing trip in Arkansas in March 2019.

On the way he pulled over to use the bathroom at a rest stop; since he planned to be gone only for a few minutes, he left his car door open.

His spontaneous decision to leave the door open would forever change a stray dog’s life!

While Mr. Shaver was in the bathroom, a starving stray dog saw the open door as an opportunity and hopped in. When Bill came back a minute later he couldn't believe his eyes!  Luckily for this abandoned pooch, Bill loves dogs.

In fact, he already had three rescued dogs back home. This new rescue definitely needed to eat, so Bill gave her all he had, a Rice Krispy treat. As Bill watched the starving stray gobble up the food, he immediately fell in love with the little dog. He sent a picture to his wife Angela, asking if it was alright to bring this dog home. Of course, Angela said yes.

“I asked him what our new dog’s name was,” Bill's wife told The Dodo.

The two of them decided to call her River because of where they found her.

While Bill continued to drive, River slept peacefully in the passenger seat. When they arrived home, Bill’s son and wife came out to meet the new dog. However, River felt safe inside the car and refused to leave.

Once he realized River would not leave the car on her own, Bill picked her up and carried her to the backyard. Once she sniffed around the premises, she quickly grew comfortable.

River finally had a forever home!

The Shaver family introduced River to their other dogs one-by-one. They were glad to see River getting along well with the others. Once the dogs were properly introduced, Bill brought River inside. Poor River was covered in ticks, and the former stray had blood on her neck and face. Bill gave her a bath.

After she was dried off and the ticks were removed, she got a really good meal. Next, Bill made her a bed next to the space heater in their bedroom, where she slept peacefully all night.

The next day, Bill made an appointment with the vet to check out her the cuts on her neck and face. The vet informed Bill and Angela that River had a few health problems. These included tapeworms and heartworms, and the wounds on her face and neck were from a fight.

However, the vet prescribed the right medication, and soon River was one healthy dog!

Since then, River has grown more and more comfortable and happy in her new home. She and her dog siblings love playing with each other, and River loves spending time with Bill and Angela. Little did River know when she jumped into Bill’s car, she would end up in the best forever home a dog could ever wish for!
