Waitresses work long hours at jobs that are stressful, low-paying, and usually thankless. Too often, customers are more anxious to complain than anything else. But the experience of one waitress is proving that this isn’t always the case!

Shannon Vargas is a single mom who works at the Oak Lawn Original Pancake House in Illinois and she recently received the shock of her life when a customer gave her a $2,020 tip!

Shannon recalls the moment when she received the money, which is detailed here by NBC Chicago.

She had just given a customer a bill of $36.73 when she was given the tip. Going around the corner to open the envelope, she was overwhelmed by the amount and couldn’t believe her luck! She asked if it was a joke and the customers told her that it wasn’t. Shannon was so shocked that she began to cry.

The amount wasn’t random; instead, it was part of the 2020 Tip Challenge that is sweeping the nation. Restaurant customers are leaving their waitresses tips of $2,020 to bring in the new decade.

While Shannon was stunned to receive the money, she couldn’t have been any happier, and it couldn’t have come at a better time! Shannon has been living at a nearby hotel with her two teenage children. Enduring rough times, she has no cellphone or vehicle and has to ride a bus to get to work.

Once she overcame her shock, Shannon was elated, explaining how this gave her the opportunity to breathe for a little while. The people who work alongside Shannon were also thrilled, reporting that she deserves the tip with her sweet and humble attitude.

And the good news didn’t end there! Ultimately, Shannon’s story led her to have a GoFundMe page set up in her honor.

Shannon’s goals are simple: Get a home and a vehicle. She says that she already has a good job, so she just needs these two things to help her move forward.

We agree that Shannon is the perfect person to receive the $2,020 tip and are so glad that this will help her get her life on track. Let others know about the 2020 Tip Challenge.
