Singer-Songwriter Vince Gill Says Contemporary Country Music Isn't His Cup Of Tea
Jun 08, 2020 by apost team
Vince Gill is one of the biggest names in country music. He has been since the 1980s. In 2019, he was asked about the new direction the genre has taken. The response that he gave surprised some fans of country music. It wasn't just that he said what he said. In fact, it was more the way that Gill presented his opinion that changed the way people thought about him.
The great thing about Vince Gill, and one of the reasons he's been such an ambassador for country music, is his understanding of music history. Gill is aware of the way popular music has evolved over the years. He knows that what he wanted to say as an artist is different from other musicians like Johnny Cash wanted to do. In the same way, Cash was different from earlier artists like Gene Autry or Roy Acuff. When he told Dan Rather in an interview in 2019 that today's direction of country music is not really "his cup of tea", he understands that this is perfectly natural and, you might say, almost the way it should be.

The truth is, every generation has its share of very talented musicians. There's lots of room for skilled musicians at the top. Everyone in the audience will respond to something slightly different. So liking one style more than another doesn't have to be done disrespectfully. Gill found a way to acknowledge the skill and competence of contemporary country artists, even as he said their work just isn't for him.
Vince Gill's classy attitude and optimistic outlook have served him well throughout his career. It's easy to see why he's been so successful for such a long time. His ego isn't so big that it overshadows every other professional musician's legacy in his mind.
