For many decades, American country music was by and large a plain-spoken genre. Songwriters cared about delivering a message in tune with the music and without ambiguity.

This was also the case with the blues, but once jazz musicians started performing with rhythm and blues bands, things changed and lyrics became more sophisticated and symbolic. It took a while for country music to catch up, but we now have artists such as Keith Urban, whose lyrics require closer analysis.

"Gemini" was released in 2018; it was not an instant hit, but it gradually grew popular. The song was clearly about a woman, and there was widespread speculation about whether the character in the song was fictitious or perhaps someone close to Urban. It took an interview with Entertainment Tonight to settle this matter: "Gemini" is about his wife, Hollywood actress Nicole Kidman.

Those who follow either Urban or Kidman know that they are a fabulously happy couple; in Kidman's case, her breakup with actor Tom Cruise was particularly painful because it happened in the midst of a pregnancy that ended up in a miscarriage. In "Gemini," Urban praises his wife, whose astrological sign happens to be Gemini, and he even offers a glimpse of their intimate life, which we can easily guess means that Nicole is a wildcat in the bedroom as well as being a smart cookie.

As for Kidman, she has admitted on a radio show quoted by People that it does make her blush a little when the couple's sex life suddenly becomes the subject of a song. However, she did admit that she enjoys being a muse for her husband's art.
