Singer David Bowie's Daughter Has Grown Into A Young Lady

Jan 15, 2021 by apost team

The late David Bowie and Iman Abdulmajid, his wife, introduced their newborn daughter to the world more than 17 years ago. We first saw Alexandria Zahra Jones, also known as Lexi, in an exclusive photoshoot for Hello! magazine in September 2000. The celebrated musician and supermodel may have opened up for the unique interview, but that was only one of the very few times they talked to the press about their family.

It's been gathered from their occasional statements and close friends that their lives changed drastically after Jones' birth. The two had to make a few adjustments in their lives to better raise their daughter. However, several tiny bits of Jones' life have shown through her and her mother's social media accounts.

Young Jones has grown up to be a big deal since her early debut in showbiz. The 23-year-old, one of the most famous children of celebrities in the world, seems to prefer a private life just like her father. Let’s have a look at what we do know, though.

A Miracle Baby

Iman and Bowie only had one child, Jones. Both had a child each from previous relationships, but it is reported that they had tried to conceive together in futility. In 2009, Iman spoke to Parade magazine about the huge difference between childbirth in her 20s versus her experience in her 50s. In fact, Iman referred to Jones' birth as a miracle.

She had tried in vitro fertilization (IVF) but was unsuccessful, according to her interview in Parade. It is reported that the couple was considering adoption when she fell pregnant. Iman additionally divulged to Hello! during an interview that Lexi brought so much joy to her life, bringing her and Bowie closer as a couple. The two had been married for eight years when Jones was born. Iman was keen to state that although they had always been close, Jones strengthened their bond to one another.

The Daily Mail even reported that Bowie bought an undeveloped 64-acre property in the Catskill Mountains of New York. That is where he built a beautiful summer home so that his newfound family could get away from the hustle and bustle of New York City and enjoy some privacy.

Inspiring Bowie To Fight Cancer

According to the BBC documentary “David Bowie: The Last Five Years," the iconic artist discovered that his treatment was to be terminated while he was shooting his final music video for his song "Lazarus." The video portrayed Bowie in a hospital bed with bandages around his eyes, but the director, Johan Renck, stated that it had nothing to do with his illness.

Ivo Van Hove, one of Bowie’s closest friends, told Mirror that Jones played a huge role in motivating her father during his fight with cancer. Bowie struggled with cancer for 18 months, but his illness was only shared with those close to him. Van Hove said that his friend was fighting to live. He said, “He has a daughter of 15 and he really wanted to go on, but it was physically not possible." Despite his illness, Bowie wanted to keep living for his daughter, wife and music.

Bowie died on Jan. 10, 2016 at his home on Lafayette Street, New York City. He was said to have suffered from cancer of the liver and died two days before his birthday.

Teaching Bowie To Slow Down

Several articles were published featuring information on how Bowie's second child taught him to take up the most regular role he would ever play, being a doting father. David Buckley, Bowie’s biographer, told the Express that Bowie had missed out on most of his son’s earlier life and did not want to make the same mistake with Jones.

The article spoke of the numerous times Bowie was seen taking his daughter to school and assisting her with her homework.

Bowie had told the Daily Mail that having another child had helped him to tone down his workaholic inclinations and motivated him to keep his health in check.

Iman Realigned Her Priorities For Lexi

Iman is a Somali fashion model, entrepreneur and actress. She is most popularly known for her role as muse for renowned designers like Calvin Klein, Yves Saint Laurent and Gianni Versace. As such, her life was filled with glamour and the busy lifestyle of someone of her status.

All this changed after Jones was born. Iman rescheduled her life to fit in homework and school events for her daughter. According to The Guardian, Iman spoke to Grazia magazine in 2013 about the probability of a Bowie tour and divulged that they could not travel because they had a 12-year-old girl who was in school. Her schedule at the time revolved around Lexi, and they could not disrupt her education for a tour. Iman said that they would visit him on that specific tour, but they wouldn't travel with him.

She even said that she and Bowie preferred to transport their daughter to school in New York City instead of delegating those duties to nannies.

Bowie’s Flamboyant Persona Did Not Faze Her

Her father’s extraordinary and stylish lifestyle would have intimidated or confused others but not little Jones. Iman once told Parade that having a child in her 50s came with a lot of patience. Her career had just started bearing fruit when she had her first child.

As such, she was forced to travel with her around the world until she was old enough to be enrolled in a school. Iman says that while it was difficult to leave her first-born behind, Jones felt that she was at a disadvantage because her parents were always around. Iman recounts the day Jones first saw a photo of Bowie as one of his eccentric stage personas, Ziggy Stardust. She was 4 years old at the time. Bowie’s makeup did not bother her at all. In fact, her only concern was why her dad’s hair was orange.

Jones was born on Aug. 15, 2000. She celebrated her 16th birthday in 2016. In a heartfelt message, her mother took to Instagram to wish her daughter a happy birthday by sharing a golden photo of her.

Iman wrote, “Happy sweet 16th birthday to my baby girl Lexi! Stay sweet.” We would be completely in the dark about Lexi’s life if her mother hadn’t been so proud of shouting her out on social media.

Stylish Lexi

Iman has not made a habit of posting her daughter on Instagram regularly, but sometimes, she just can’t help herself. She posted a photo of Jones in March 2017 and captioned it, “My Sunday boo!” Jones looked subtly stylish with a grand nose ring that depicted her taste for wild fashion just like her father. The nose ring is obviously not that much of a fashion statement, but for a 16 year old like her, it showed the beginning of a stylish and tasteful life.

Most of David Bowie's fans had no clue who Jones was. Her parents went above and beyond to keep her life as private as possible. She was photographed to appear on the cover of Hello! magazine when she was just 17 days old, but her parents insisted that that would be Jones' only interview.

The paparazzi haven't been so lucky at photographing her either. Jones was first seen after her father's demise more than eight months later. Before then, she had been photographed while on a trip to Venice with Bowie in 2013.

Iman's pride for her daughter could not stop her from sharing her milestones and joining her to celebrate important occasions. The supermodel shared yet another photo of Jones on her 17th birthday. She wrote, "The Queen of my heart Lexi Jones at 17 years old!" The photo appeared to be a selfie taken on a beach.

Iman decided to go all out the following year, posting a staggering 18 photos of her daughter to celebrate her 18th birthday. The first photo featured Iman and Bowie with newborn Jones. The photo series portrayed Lexi's years as a toddler and her transition into her teens, ending with a saddening picture of Bowie holding little Lexi’s hand on the street.

Her preference for a more lowkey life is most probably why we haven't seen as much of Jones as other celebrity children, despite her being an adult now. However, she has recently started posting more on social media, and we are living for it!

Living A Normal Teenage Life

Bowie’s daughter seems to have an Instagram account, Lexi Jones, and although it is not verified, it is followed by and linked to Iman’s account. She posted a photo of herself and a friend during her high school graduation in 2018. Jones captioned the post, “Never thought I’d ever been graduating but the day has come and I’m so thankful for everyone that has supported me thru this. Congrats class of 2018 Wuta ride.” Of course, Jones had to celebrate her graduation without her father.

Tribute To Bowie

Although Jones has never publicly spoken about her father’s death, she shared a tribute to him in the form of a permanent forearm tattoo. It shows a floral crescent moon and writing that reads, “Daddy xx” and “1947-2016,” the span of her father’s life.

Budding Artist

Jones uses her Instagram account to showcase her fascinating artwork. She has shared a few pieces and promised that she might start selling them soon. Iman is likely proud of her daughter’s achievements and even shares Lexi’s art on her Instagram and Facebook pages. According to The Sun, Jones moved to Los Angeles in May 2020 where she sells customized clothing and artwork.

Her mother told Porter that several designers and modeling agencies contacted her to ask if Lexi would be interested in modeling for them after she posted a photo on her 18th birthday. However, she declined, stating that she knew they were only interested in her because she was Bowie's daughter.

Jones might have been sheltered from the public eye as a child, but that did not change the fact that she is an extraordinary person. Her accomplishments in the art world are promising and inspiring to young people around the globe.
