Preparing for a new baby can be a challenge for parents. However, parents in Finland are one step ahead due to a unique program.

Finnish baby boxes are a tradition, given to mothers in Finland for more than 75 years now, as the Smithsonian points out. These boxes are intended to ensure that every Finnish baby has the bare minimum that they need to be comfortable after birth.

The Basics for Baby

Each box contains a few simple garments, a baby sleeping bag, a snowsuit and other outdoor gear needed in Finland, bathing products, diapers, and bedding. There is also a small mattress that fits into the box so it can be used as a safe bassinet.

Parents in Finland can choose between receiving the box or receiving a check for 140 Euros. Most choose the box because it has a much higher value than the cash. As a result, almost every new baby in Finland will be wearing the same snowsuit in any given year.

Promoting Health and More

This box is good for the health of babies in a variety of ways. First, it provides a safe place to sleep, which can decrease infant mortality rates immensely. Second, it is given to mothers who get prenatal care by their fourth month of pregnancy, thus encouraging women to get the early care that they need for good health. Last, it is an equalizing factor. Regardless of class, every baby has a safe and warm start to life.

Several agencies in the United States are starting similar programs. Will this help our infant mortality rates? Only the future can tell. Let us know what you think.
