Simon Cowell Helps Shut Down Dog Meat Farm in South Korea With Donation Of $30,000

The old joke about dogs being eaten in Asia is, unfortunately, no laughing matter. The reality is actually quite shocking. Current estimates reveal that over 10 million dogs are slaughtered for meat in China alone each year. Furthermore, many of the dogs are family pets who are lost or stolen by the dog meat dealers. There is even a dog eating festival held each year in the city of Yulin, China.

Simon Cowell is well known as a judge on reality TV talent shows, and at times he can come across as brutally honest and even heartless. However, recent events show that he has a soft spot when it comes to dogs. He has recently stepped forward to save pets from dog meat farms in South Korea by contributing over $30,000 to Humane Society International (HSI).

Mr. Cowell also appeared on a British talk show and spoke about the cause. He expressed his feelings about dogs, describing them as kind and sweet animals. He explained that eating a dog could be compared to eating a friend. Cowell owns two Yorkshire Terriers for whom he has great affection.

HSI responded with appreciation for Cowell’s contribution, stating that his donation will help save over 200 dogs and puppies. With the funds, HSI will be able to travel to the dog meat farms in South Korea, rescue the dogs and send them to other countries where they can be adopted by caring families.

According to HSI, it’s not only important to save these dogs from death, but also to spare them from the terrible conditions that they’re kept in before they’re slaughtered. Animals are often stolen while still wearing their collars and suffer injuries when being transported long distances without food or water. When the pets arrive at dog meat markets they’re forced to watch as other dogs are bludgeoned to death or thrown alive into boiling water.

The numbers in South Korea are staggering. There are over 17,000 dog meat farms that supply about 2.5 million dogs to restaurants and markets each year. HSI has succeeded in closing 12 dog farms in South Korea, which has spared the lives of 1400 dogs.

HSI is working with the South Korean government to close dog meat farms, and they believe they could eventually put an end to the appalling industry. The organization believes that by saving the animals they will also allow the farm owners to convert their businesses into growing mushrooms or chilies.

There are currently 83 organizations that are striving to save pets from the industry. Each time a dog meat farm is closed or converted to a more profitable, humane operation, it helps convince the South Korean government that the cruel trade can be shut down.
