Going to a competition-based reality show is nerve-wracking. Being in front of some of the most famous people in the world and showing them your talents is extremely intimidating, even for people that are confident in themselves and their abilities. It's likely that you'll want to make an impression on the judges, meaning that you'll try to look your best and style your hair and makeup in a fashion that will leave a lasting mark on the memories of the judges.

In this video from 2016, one contestant named Samantha Lavery on X Factor in the UK was asked by Simon Cowell to remove her makeup in order to make a better impression on the judges. The advice may have been direct but it appeared to pay off in the end!

For one contestant, her audition ended a little differently than most. Samantha Lavery, a contestant, trying out for X Factor in the UK, was dressed up to the nines for her performance. She curled her beautiful long hair and put on a lot of makeup to stand out from other contestants.

Simon is known to be a hard-to-please judge, but the way he reacted to Samantha’s performance was difficult to watch! He insulted her vocal ability and doubted her talent. But everyone was shocked when he called her back for a spot as a wildcard audition spot!

The people chosen as wildcards were brought back for one last chance to sing in front of Simon and impress him. Just as before, Samantha was dressed up wildly. Her makeup was heavy, and her hair was abundant and perhaps distracting from her performance.

Simon made sure that she knew he wasn’t pleased with the way she decided to present herself.

He told Samantha that her makeup made her look like she was hiding something. Being young means that you can embrace your young, fresh, and natural looks without the need for cosmetics and other products to distract from your natural beauty.

In order to showcase her true talent instead of her makeup and hair, Simon asked her to remove the makeup.

Although Samantha may have just been trying to present herself in a way that emulated other famous pop stars, the judges mutually agreed that she would have a better chance at getting people to pay attention to her vocal ability without all of the cosmetics.

After taking a break from the show to remove her makeup and come out with her freshest face forward, she sang again for Simon. They were happy about her new look and it definitely paid off in the end! They decided that her performance was good enough to continue on the show, making Samantha’s hopes and dreams come true.
