Sigourney Weaver is essentially considered royalty when it comes to the world of science fiction filmography. She has paved the way for many actresses in the industry, specifically those interested in the science fiction genre. Weaver’s role as Ellen Ripley in the 1979 film “Alien” catapulted her to fame, resulting in a wonderfully successful career in the years to follow. As an actress, Weaver has gone on to be a powerful impact on popular culture, receiving several accolades along the way and a plethora of awards and nominations.

Weaver was born on Oct. 8, 1949, in New York City. Her mother, Elizabeth Inglis, was an actress, and her father, Pat Weaver, was a television executive for NBC. With such an illustrious and talented family, it’s no surprise that Weaver has gone on to live such a successful life. She developed a love for acting during her teenage years and never looked back.

The actress has experienced plenty of highs and lows along the way. She reached the height of 5 foot 10 when she was still a child, which had a negative impact on her self-esteem. However, now Weaver is praised for her beautiful looks and amazing gifts as an actress. Along with “Alien,” she is also known for her roles in “Ghostbusters,” “Avatar” and “My Salinger Year.”

Nowadays, Weaver is 72 years old and looks absolutely gorgeous. On top of that, she is still continuing to grace the big screen with plenty of upcoming projects. Read on to find out more about Weaver’s career and what’s in store for her future.

Reflecting On Her Career

Weaver has credited her life growing up in New York as being an influence on some of her acting gigs. Speaking with Collider in March 2021, she talked about how she spent some time working in the publishing and literary industry and remembered knowing women who were “eccentric and marvelous and very intimidating.” These people left a lasting impression on Weaver, much like how she’s gone on to leave her mark on the science fiction film industry.

Weaver also spoke with Collider about what it was like working on the “Alien” and “Avatar” franchises and what she’s excited about in her upcoming future. She said that James Cameron’s “sense of structure of story” was the best constructed in “Aliens,” as she really enjoyed portraying the character of Ellen Ripley in that film the most.

While Weaver is known for her iconic roles in several science fiction films, she has also shown her depth and range as an actress by appearing in other genres. Some of her other work includes roles in “The Cabin in the Woods,” “Finding Dory” and “SpongeBob SquarePants.”

In February 2015, she spoke with her co-star Jamie Lee Curtis from the comedy “You Again” for Interview Magazine. Surprisingly, Weaver didn’t enjoy her time in drama school but now has her own theater called the Flea. She also gave her husband Jim Simpson “all the credit for the Flea.” The busy woman has learned to balance a lot as a wife, mother and working actress, on top of being a co-founder of the theater.

Looking Ahead

Despite being such an influential woman in the business, Weaver has shied away from the term “icon,” as she told HuffPost in May 2021. “I’m just a working actor,” she explained. “I love being part of ensembles.” Weaver added, “What I appreciate is it probably also means that I’ve lasted a long time. And I continue to work and I’m very grateful for that. So I guess I sort of run away from the title icon – I don’t really know what it means.”

Nowadays, Weaver is 72 years old and looks absolutely breathtaking. She is also continuing to look ahead to her even brighter future. “I’m so optimistic about the future because I see our world bubbling over with women’s scripts and women directors,” she said

According to IMDB, Weaver has plenty of projects in the near future, including four works in the “Avatar” franchise. She is also currently filming “Master Gardener.” “My gosh, I’ve never been this busy in my life with so many different challenges that are being sent to me,” Weaver explained.

Speaking with HuffPost, Weaver said, “Finally at my advanced age, I think there’s a greater appreciation of what older women characters bring, and maybe older men characters, too.” She also noticed a rise of “wonderful roles” that show older women in a great, dynamic light. Weaver added, “I can’t speak for young women but I think it does mean a lot to women to see that this whole generation of women is not invisible – they don’t have to be invisible anymore.”
