Shirley MacLaine Makes a Rare Video Appearance at 92 & Her Candid Admission About "Sweet Charity" Has Fans Completely Charmed

Shirley MacLaine turns 92 in April. She does not often appear on social media. When she does, the internet notices. On August 17, 2026, the Southampton Playhouse in New York shared a video to Instagram promoting their upcoming screening of "Sweet Charity" — Bob Fosse's 1969 film. The video opened with a title card: "A brief message from Shirley MacLaine." And then there she was.

MacLaine, born April 24, 1934, was seated on a couch, silver-haired and entirely herself. She looked directly into the camera and said: "Hi, Southampton Playhouse. Wish I could be with you. I would like to see 'Sweet Charity' again. Now, while you're watching it, remember how hard we worked. And between you and me, it didn't do very well. So I hope you guys like it. Much love."

She blew a kiss to the camera. The video ended.

The comments filled up within hours. "Oh, Shirley. I love you. What an incredible human being," one fan wrote. "I fell in love with Shirley in 1969 when I saw her up on the big screen in 'Sweet Charity,'" wrote another. A third declared: "One of the last living old Hollywood legends." Someone shared a memory of meeting her in the 1990s while working room service at a hotel and finding her "incredibly kind, warm and down-to-earth. There was no sense of distance or stardom at all — she was simply lovely."

The self-deprecating line about the box office is, historically speaking, accurate. "Sweet Charity" — Bob Fosse's directorial debut — opened in 1969 on a $20 million budget and grossed approximately $4 million domestically. Its failure was credited with slowing the rollout of big-budget Hollywood musicals for years.

It has, since then, found its audience. MacLaine, apparently, always knew it would.

MacLaine starred as Charity Hope Valentine — a good-natured New York City dance-hall hostess searching for love — alongside Sammy Davis Jr. and Chita Rivera. The film showcased Fosse's choreography and MacLaine's gifts as a dancer and comedic actress. It was not a commercial success. It is now regarded as a landmark of the genre.

MacLaine won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1984 for "Terms of Endearment" — but "Sweet Charity" holds a particular place in her legacy. She was nominated for the Oscar six times across her career, for "Some Came Running," "The Apartment," "Irma la Douce," "The Turning Point," a documentary, and finally "Terms of Endearment," which won.

Her last on-screen appearance was in the 2022 film "American Dreamer" and two episodes of "Only Murders in the Building." In November 2025, Variety announced she would be starring opposite Ansel Elgort in a road trip comedy titled "Lucy Boomer." In December 2025, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the first-ever Dance Hall of Fame induction ceremony — an award officially renamed the Dance Hall of Fame Shirley MacLaine Lifetime Achievement Award in her honor.

"Dance, what I've learned being part of it, is why I'm still here," she told the ceremony. She was 91 at the time. She is now 92. She still has the quick wit, the direct gaze, and the willingness to say, to a room full of admirers, that a film she gave everything to did not do very well — and mean it as affection rather than apology.
