Ashley Williams is a young woman with a bright future ahead of her. Sadly, it’s a future she’ll have to reach without her mother. That’s what led her to dedicate her spectacular performance on the X-Factor to the woman who raised her.

Powerful Pipes

Ashley chose the Whitney Houston classic “I Will Always Love You.” This powerful ballad is one of the most challenging pieces in modern music. It requires a two-octave range and excellent vocal support to belt out the high notes. Ashley lost her mother at 14. Since that harrowing moment, she hasn’t let anything hold her back.

That’s why she chose to take on Whitney’s song and sing it to make her mother proud. Her family joined her at the performance and waited to see what the judges said.

Judges’ Reaction

Simon Cowell was skeptical when Ashley announced her choice of song. He often discourages singers from tackling big numbers because he doesn’t think they can do them justice. In interviews, he’s said he especially hates when contestants want to sing Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey songs because so few young singers can nail them.

Simon gave his trademark scowl at first, but even his frozen heart couldn’t help but melt when Ashely started singing.

By the end of her performance, all four judges were on their feet, giving Ashley a standing ovation. Kelly Rowland and Demi Lovato couldn’t choke back their tears. Simon even said singers like Ashley are the reason the X-Factor came to America before voting her onto the next round of the competition.

Do you think Ashley’s mom was listening up in heaven? What would she have thought of this performance?
