International superstar Shakira is referred to as the "Queen of Latin Music." She was born in Barranquilla, Colombia, and has always had a passion for music. The singer-songwriter recorded her first album with Sony Music Colombia in 1990 at the age of 13. Shakira's fifth album was her first in the English-language market. It was released in 2001 and called "Laundry Service." The record launched the star to worldwide success by selling 13 million copies internationally. The song the singer is most known for is her hit "Hips Don't Lie."

As of 2018, Shakira was the female Latin artist who had sold the most albums in history. The superstar is credited with opening doors for other Latin talents in the international market. She has received numerous accolades, including 3 Grammy Awards, 12 Latin Grammy Awards, 4 MTV Video Music Awards and 6 Guinness World Records.

Born February 2, 1977, Shakira would go on to meet the love of her life, FC Barcelona player Gerard Piqué, who was born exactly ten years later to the day. The age difference has not been a hindrance for this couple, who have been together since 2011. Their first child, a boy named Milan, was born in 2013. The couple's second child, another boy named Sasha, was born in 2015. The pair have decided not to marry but remain a committed team working together to raise their kids.

The happy couple met in 2010 when Piqué appeared in the music video for Shakira's song "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)." Choosing not to get married has worked well for the two stars, and they embrace the non-traditional nature of their relationship. Keep reading to find out why Shakira didn't want to get married and what the couple fights about most often.

The couple met in 2010 around the same time as the World Cup in South Africa, where Shakira was performing, and Piqué was competing. The soccer player shared

"It all started when we were in South Africa and I wrote to her. She was already there because she sang in the opening ceremony and I asked her what the weather was like. It is the typical stupid question... it got to the point where I told her we would have to get to the World Cup final to see her again — she was singing at the final."

The singer didn't know who Piqué was until he appeared in her music video. "I wasn't a soccer fan, so I didn't know who he was. But when I saw the ('Waka Waka') video, I was like, 'Hmm. That one's kind of cute,'" Shakira explained with a laugh. "And then someone decided to introduce us."

The pair began dating and have been together since, although never married. "We have never been a traditional couple," she said. "We don't have a written deal to share the tasks or anything like that, but we both are very involved in parenting and try to sort it out the best we can, we support each other and we also find a huge help in our families. We don't know a different way to do it!"

Elaborating on the topic of marriage, Shakira shared:

"We already have what's essential, you know? We have a union, a love for each other, and a baby. I think that those aspects of our relationship are already established, and marriage is not going to change them. But if I'm ever going to get married, he's the one."

Being a mother to two boys while maintaining a music career hasn't been easy for Shakira. However, she loves being a mom regardless. "I used to be the center of my world, and now I am only a satellite of my children. It's the hardest job I've ever had," she said.

As parents, Shakira and Piqué's parenting styles complement each other. She explained:

"He's got his feet on the ground and is very practical about problem-solving. When I get stressed about how to organize things or juggle it all, he helps put it all in perspective. And he is my biggest support. We're both very hands-on parents, so it never feels like one is carrying the entire load on their own. He probably lets them have a little more chocolate than I'd like, though."

But, the couple is still only human, so they are prone to fights and arguments like anyone else. Shakira shared what she does that gets on Piqué's nerves. "My poor husband, slash boyfriend, slash baby daddy, whatever you want to call him, he has to wait up for me so long. He's tired of waiting up," she said. "'Cause Colombian time is not the same as Catalonian time, Spanish time."

They are two very different people, with Shakira being more free-spirited while Piqué prefers structure. The mother of two added:

"His mind is structured like that and mine… I've become a lot more punctual since I met him. But the times that we actually fight is because I'm late and he's waiting up."
