See Billy Porter Set The Stage On Fire With “Everything’s Coming Up Roses”

If James Corden of the “Late Late Show” is hosting an awards show, you can bet that there are going to be some antics. Cordon was the charming emcee for the 2019 Tony Awards and along with taking every opportunity he could to sing, he introduced segments, interviewed audience members, and even brought some late night show flavor to the commercial breaks with some spontaneous karaoke.

In a roomful of talent on Broadway’s biggest night, how can Corden not ask people to sing? He had the perfect group of people ripe for the picking for karaoke during the commercial breaks. Vanity Fair reports that he got Ben Platt from “Dear Evan Hansen” to sing “Tomorrow” from “Annie,” and he coerced Darren Criss, Anthony Ramos, and Christopher Jackson to do “96,000” from “In The Heights.” There was an additional performance that really electrified the crowd, and we almost missed it.

That’s because sadly, the cameras are moved and reset during the break and so none of the commercial break karaoke was caught on film. In this day and age, however, there is plenty of cell phone footage available. The performance by one particular star that brought the house down was thankfully caught by the audience’s phones, and Corden played it on the “Late Late Show” for everyone to see, not just those in the building that night.

It was the Broadway and TV star Billy Porter who absolutely nailed it with his rendition of “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” from “Gypsy.” As soon as Corden went over to him in his seat, Porter was ready to go and immediately asked him, “What am I singing?” before taking the mic and choosing the first song on the provided list. He stood up and walked out into the aisle and the crowd then saw that Porter was dressed in a pink and red suit with matching sparkling glasses, and golden high heels recalling his role in “Kinky Boots.” He sang a few perfect lines with a live pianist, and joked with Corden saying, “I didn’t come here to work tonight,” before Corden retorted, “No you clearly wanted no-one to look at you.”

Porter then belted out the lyrics, emulating Bette Midler in her role as Mama Rose in the 1993 movie version of “Gypsy,” with his controlled voice and perfect key. It is a performance not to miss, and because it wasn’t broadcast on TV we almost did.
