Sean 'Diddy' Combs's Fear Of Clowns Is Revealed On The Ellen Show

While some people can find clowns to be charming or amusing, it'd be a rather safe bet that most Americans find them unsettling and creepy. There are many, as displayed in this Guardian article that outright fear them. From crying little children to nervous grown adults, clowns can often be the subject of fear and distrust for many. One of these people is Sean "Diddy" Combs.

Why So Serious?

Why are they so scary? Their unnaturally pale faces and fake smiles can evoke the "uncanny valley" effect and feel like a thinly veiled trap for something sinister. Their naturally uncertain nature can feel like a danger to safety and comfort. Pop culture certainly hasn't helped the notion with homicidal monsters in pancake makeup like Pennywise from It and the Joker from the Batman mega-franchise filling America's nightmares. Of course, real-life examples like John Wayne Gacy and the "evil clown" craze from a couple years back only exasperates the image. There's even a scientific term for it: coulrophobia.

Bad Boy for Life

When hip-hop mogul and fashion designer Sean "Diddy" Combs appeared on the Ellen show, he almost certainly did not have the little monsters on his mind, but host Ellen DeGeneres clearly had other ideas. During the course of the interview, Ellen brought up Halloween and a rumor that Diddy feared clowns. The Bad Boy Records head responded with a firm "no," believing that, as a black man, he had too many other things to be scared of to worry about clowns.

No Way Out... from the Clowns

At that point, Ellen pressed it again and immediately a clown based Pennywise from last year's cinematic adaptation of It popped out right next to Diddy. As to be expected, he freaked. Diddy sprang out of his seat and performed a kung-fu kick before dancing off his nerves. Ellen proceeded to cackle at her guest's behavior. Diddy, to his credit, seemed to take in stride, noting "I got you" in response and jokingly stating his "street cred" was going to take a hit for this.

Can't Nobody Hold Me Down

Since his appearance, Diddy has bought his own Pennywise costume and videoed himself dancing in it. The video was posted on his Twitter where it's had over 5 million views and counting. Both videos can be seen on EllenTube.
