Seal Scares Baby Polar Bear By Accident

This adorable footage shows a mother polar bear taking her two cubs on a hunt. Not only is this an opportunity to catch some much-needed sustenance, but it is also a chance for the young polar bears to learn the valuable skill of hunting. The adult polar bear can be seen wandering around with her cubs in tow. She is looking for the perfect location to wait for her prey. There are several holes scattered throughout the layer of ice that rests above the water. As seals need to come up for air every 30 minutes, these holes often provide polar bears with a window of opportunity.

After finding one of these holes, the mother polar bear lays down in front of it. Having hunted seals for her entire life, she understands that this form of hunting is a waiting game. Although the mother bear waits patiently for dinner to arrive, her cubs aren't so focused. One can be seen snuggling up against her mother's backside. The other cub wandered off to play with some ice. It seems as though the cubs won't learn much from this hunt after all.

As the polar bear patiently awaits the arrival of her prey, the footage cuts to show a seal swimming beneath the water. With dozens of different holes in the area, there is no way of telling where a seal may arise. Although it's not clear why the mother bear chose this particular hole, she seems confident that something will appear. After waiting for a long time, the bear starts to second guess her choice. All of a sudden, a seal pops its head out of the water to catch some air. Unfortunately, the lucky seal chose a hole away from the mother polar bear.

Instead of popping out in front of the mother, the seal ends up surfacing next to one of the baby cubs. In the footage, the cute polar bear can be seen falling backward in surprise. This cub was too busy playing with snow and ice to learn about how polar bears hunt.

The seal clearly knows that the young bear poses no threat. Instead of diving back under the water right away, the seal calmly looks around. The mother bear couldn't have been happy at junior's behavior that day.
