When someone thinks of treasure hunting, one typically imagines following an old map and digging where X marks the spot. Very often, however, a treasure is more than just gold and precious stones. Instead, treasure can be something that tugs at the most sentimental strings of an individual’s heart. A modern-day treasure hunter recently got the chance to reunite an elderly person with something dismissed long ago as lost and forgotten.

29-year-old Luke Berube has been treasure hunting for years. A resident of Orleans, Massachusetts, Luke prefers to search for treasure near Cape Cod, although he will occasionally hunt in other areas if he is on vacation.

In his profile on Ring Finders, Luke says that he is drawn to the hobby because he enjoys diving and honing his detective skills.

In a post on his blog, Luke told of how he recently made an incredible find in Hanson, Massachusetts. Having lost out in his past expeditions, Luke decided to investigate a small pond in Hanson.

Dressed in full scuba gear and equipped with his Excalibur II metal detector, Luke was excited to get a hit in about 10 feet of water.

Digging through the mud and silt, Luke eventually found a ring on the bottom of the pond.

Taking his new treasure home, Luke cleaned it and discovered it was a class ring from Boston’s Gate of Heaven High School. Belonging to a student from the class of 1960, the band was etched with the initial “WJW.”

His curiosity piqued, Luke decided that he would try to reunite the ring with its owner. After unsuccessfully trying to research school records from the era, Luke posted a picture of the ring on the high school’s Facebook alumni page.

After a short time, Luke got a response from Christine Wadel, whose father, William Joseph Wadel, initials WJW, had attended Gate of Heaven in the 60s.

Speaking with her father, Christine confirmed that he is the owner of the missing ring.

Explaining the story to reporters from WBZ4, Christine said that her now 77-year-old father had given his class ring to his girlfriend, who had lost it in the pond several years later. Christine is ecstatic that she will soon be able to give her father the ring, saying that she feels like he will be smiling forever.

In all, Luke beams with pride at having reunited William with his long-lost ring. The now-seasoned treasure hunter says that reuniting someone with their lost valuables is something he has dreamed of his since he started the hobby.
