A little boy in China is proof positive that anyone can have an adventure if they simply step outside their door. Zhang Yangzhe, a third-grader living in Heyuan in southern China's Guangdong Province, was playing near the bank of the Dong River when he came across several fossilized dinosaur eggs.

The eggs, which measure about 3.5 inches in length, are believed to be from the Cretaceous Period, which took place about 66 million years ago. The Cretaceous Period was the last major era of the dinosaurs before their mass extinction.

Zhang told reporters of the amazing find, which has since gone viral. The little boy was with his mother, Li Xiaofang, near the riverbank looking for rocks strong enough to crack a walnut. Eventually, Zhang came upon a strange-looking rock with several circles around it.

Having an interest in science, Zhang quickly wondered if it might actually be a dinosaur egg after he had recently seen a few in a local museum. Calling his mother to the strange rock, Li agreed that the shell pattern on the rock closely matched the pattern she and Zhang had seen on the dinosaur eggs at the museum.

As Li called the police to report the possible find, Zhang stood guard over the area, making sure no one disturbed the scene. Authorities, in turn, brought experts from the Heyuan Dinosaur Museum, who confirmed that the ten-year-old boy’s find was indeed a dinosaur egg.

After further searching, scientists from the museum found an additional ten eggs at the nest. According to China Daily, Huang Dong, the former head of the Heyuan Dinosaur Museum, confirmed that the eggs had been taken to the museum for a full evaluation. Spokespeople from the museum say that they are hopeful that they will be able to determine the type of dinosaur that had laid the eggs so long ago.

Zhang’s find is truly spectacular, but it is also not uncommon for the area. Heyuan has been dubbed the nation’s “Hometown of the Dinosaur” because of the large number of fossilized eggs found in the region.

About 17,000 dinosaur eggs have been found in the city since 1996, the biggest find being a massive nest of 43 eggs that was located in 2015. Heyuan Dinosaur Museum also exhibits 10,008 eggs in their collection, the largest such exhibit in the world.

Isn't it amazing? These eggs had been lying around for millions and millions of years before this smart 10-year-old found them! Have you ever experienced or heard of anything similar? Let us know in the comments and be sure to pass this article along.
