School Teacher’s Party Policy Means Kids Whose Parents Don't Provide Food Aren't Welcome To Join In

During the month of December, there are holiday parties in many different situations. Having a holiday party for students is something common for teachers. They have the challenge of finding a way for parents to provide the snacks that have been assigned. It is easy for everyone involved to feel overwhelmed by everything occurring during this time of year.

A mother from Mississippi, named Takaria Scott, was unhappy with how her daughter's teacher decided to handle this situation. There was an effort to stop any irresponsible parents from not meeting their obligation. The teacher sent a letter home to parents. It explained that children whose parents did not provide food would not be able to eat at the holiday party. This received an emotional response and did not go down well with many parents.

The mother wrote in her December social media post stating this approach was unacceptable in her eyes. Takaria Scott provided a photo of the letter. It is obvious that the teacher from the Meridian School District was trying to lay down the law. The letter stated the day the party would be held and provided a space where each of the parents could write the item their child would be bringing to the party.

The teacher stated her philosophy clearly. If the parents did not provide any food for the party, their child would not be able to eat at the party. Scott was extremely upset by what the teacher wrote. She made sure to share the photo of the letter and the teacher's tirade about the situation on social media. Takaria believed the teacher clearly failed to teach a good lesson, stating, "Now for these kids to be between 6-7 years this should not be a philosophy. Kids are kids man. This is definitely not acceptable in my eyes." Once a photograph of the letter was shared, the post went viral. It generated more than 3,000 comments.

Some people who made comments took the side of the teacher. A common argument was if a child's parents are not responsible enough to provide for the party, these children should not be permitted to eat. One commentator gave a rather emotional response. They claimed these types of parents are always able to find some money to purchase cigarettes and other types of items that are irrelevant, but can't they purchase a bag of chips for a dollar at a Dollar Tree store?

One person responded by saying no more excuses should be made for parents who do not participate. Another person posted the children involved will still be able to get lunch. They just can't eat anything at the party. Another person stated people need to stop acting like these children are going to go hungry. A person also stated this experience will provide a real-world experience.

Many other people supported the viewpoint of the mother. They claimed that children should not be punished for things their parents can or cannot provide. One woman stated why should children whose families can't afford to bring something to a party be forced to sit and watch others eat? She said this could be an opportunity to teach these children about community service and compassion.

Another person felt it was a terrible idea to punish children because their parents didn't send food with them for the party. One person stated if a teacher provides a party, then all the students in the class need to be accommodated. Someone wanted to know whatever happened to love, giving, and kindness.

The superintendent of the school wrote a letter apologizing for the teacher's insensitive letter. It assured the families and students that all students can participate and no student will be forced to feel uncomfortable for not bringing in refreshments. Scott viewed this as a huge win. She went on Facebook and thanked everyone who reached out on this issue.
