Casey Smitherman is currently out on bail after being charged with a number of crimes. The educator is an employee of Elwood Community Schools in Indiana. Smitherman said that she became concerned for a student who had been absent from school.

In a previous instance, Smitherman and her husband had supplied the troubled child with new clothes after learning that he was in need.

This time, when Smitherman showed up at the student's home, she found him sick with a sore throat. Smitherman sprang into action and attempted to take him to a clinic for medical attention.

After being turned away because she was not the boy's parent or guardian, Smitherman went to a different clinic and pretended that the boy was her son so that he could receive treatment. The sick boy was prescribed an antibiotic with the medical bill totaling $233.

Smitherman was caught after the boy began telling others about what the administrator had done for him. She was charged with identity deception, insurance fraud, and official misconduct after turning herself into the authorities.

As part of her diversion, Smitherman will have the charges wiped from her record if she stays out of legal trouble for the next year. Smitherman is also fortunate to have the support of the school board in her decision to choose to help the student in need.
