School Principal From Texas Allegedly Told 4-Year-Old To Cut His Hair Or Wear A Dress

A school principal and superintendent inform a boy's grandmother to either cut his hair or to make him wear a dress. The boy is 4 years old and just starting into kindergarten this year. Why is the school administration so concerned about a young child's hair?

That's the question a group of Texas parents is asking their local school board. They are accusing the board of approving a dress code that discriminates against black children. At a recent board meeting of the Tatum Independent School District, parents protested over the dress code. They claim it sends the wrong message to the kids. According to Newsweek, Randi Woodley told the school board, "...hair has nothing to do with learning." It shouldn't be something of any concern at any age. Woodley is the grandmother to Michael Trimble, the four-year-old boy in question. She expressed her outrage on Facebook last month after a meeting with the school administration.

She went to the school for the "Meet the Teacher" event. Someone at the event told her she would need to speak with the principal. The principal told her that she would either need to cut her grandson's hair or braid it. Boys can't wear ponytails or man buns, according to the school's policy. When Woodley asked why her grandson couldn't wear his hair long and natural, the principal claimed it could cause a distraction. Woodley spoke with Superintendent J.P. Richardson about the situation. He told her that she had three options. Cut the hair, braid the hair, or put the boy in a dress and make him say he is a girl, Newsweek reported.

Kambry Cox, another parent at the meeting, told the story of her son Kellan. He wore his hair to school in a ponytail one day because it kept getting in his eyes. Plus, it was a hot Texas day. The hairstyle shouldn't be a problem. Kellan's kindergarten teacher disagreed. The kid came home and told his mom that he thought something was wrong with his hair. This controversy has brought out a lot of support from around the country. A petition on Change.org is calling for the policy to change. They don't want to see Woodley's grandson forced to cut his hair.
