Sarah McLachlan is one of the most prominent singer-songwriters of our generation. McLachlan has been wowing fans for over 30 years with her inspiring, emotion-driven songs that are powered by her beautiful, mezzo-soprano voice. As of 2015, McLachlan has sold over 40 million albums across the world. Of her extensive catalog, none has been as noted as 1997’s Surfacing. McLachlan won four Juno Awards and two Grammy Awards for the album. 1997 was another big year for McLachlan because she also co-founded the Lilith Fair that year. The concert tour ran until 1999 and allowed audiences to enjoy a series of female-led performances for the first time ever.

One of McLachlan’s most well-known hits is “Angel,” the fourth single off of Surfacing. McLachlan wrote the song after the death of her friend Jonathan Melvoin, who worked as a keyboardist with the alternative rock group Smashing Pumpkins. “Angel” earned McLachlan a place on the Billboard Hot 100, where it remained in the top 10 for 19 weeks in a row.
