Hollywood stars Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick are no strangers to making headlines. The pair are both incredibly successful actors who have had full and varied careers in both television and film. Parker and Broderick started dating in the mid-1990s after her highly publicized relationship with John F. Kennedy Jr. ended. Like many actors, they both share a love of theater. The two have fostered a successful marriage, having been married for over 20 years.

Parker is best known for her role as Carrie Bradshaw in the hit TV show, “Sex and The City.” The show was a huge success and has made a lasting impression on American pop culture and television history. Parker owns her own production company and has starred in Broadway productions since she was a child. Broderick is known for his role as Ferris Bueller in the film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” as well as a long list of other films and Broadway productions.

The couple has three children together, a son named James Wilkie Broderick, and twin daughters Marion Elwell Broderick and Tabitha Hodge Broderick. The twin’s middle names come from Parker’s mother’s side of the family, which she discovered while researching her ancestry for the show “Who Do You Think You Are?”

Parker has been associated with New York City since her role as Carrie Bradshaw, and she and her family still live there to this day. They have managed to keep a low profile and aren’t associated with any scandals in the media like celebrity families can sometimes be. Instead, they seem like any other normal and happy family filled with love and support. Broderick and Parker’s son James just turned 18 and will attend Brown University next year.

Sarah Jessica Parker was born in Nelsonville, Ohio in 1965. She is the daughter of Stephen and Barbara Parker. Her father was an entrepreneur and journalist, while her mother operated a nursery school and was a teacher. Her parents were divorced when she was three years old and her mother remarried a man named Paul Forste. Parker has seven siblings between her mother’s two marriages.

Parker has spoken about growing up in poverty. In an interview with the New York Times, she said:

"We were on welfare...I knew I was different from the kids who pay for lunch or bring their lunch from home. It was a stigma thing. I was not the only person receiving a free lunch, but you are aware."

She said to People, "I wouldn't change any of it, for anything ... for the most part, we had everything we needed. Not always, but for the most part." She mentioned in the same interview that there were times when she was hungry at school or the electricity would be out at her home. However, she expressed that she has no regrets and credits her experiences as a child as part of what made her who she is today.

Despite not having a lot of money, Parker’s family was able to go to the theater and enjoy ballet performances as well as plays and musicals. Parker said in the same interview that this is where she fell in love with acting. When she was just 11-years-old, Parker made her Broadway debut in a revival of “The Innocents” in 1976. She then starred in the 1979 production of “Annie.”

From 1998 to 2004 Parker starred in “Sex and The City” which aired on HBO. The show lasted for six seasons and had 96 episodes total. Over the course of those six years, Parker received two Emmys, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and four Golden Globes for her performance as Carrie Bradshaw.

Parker starred in and was the executive producer of the show “Divorce.” The show began airing on HBO in 2016 and finished its third and final season in 2019. The show is a comedy-drama series about a couple who are in the process of divorcing. Parker portrayed the character, Frances Dufresne, a woman who has an affair that precedes her divorce.

In 2005, Parker founded her own production company called Pretty Matches with Alison Benson. Benson gave this quote to Harper’s Bazaar about Parker, “She's a pro. If I say to her, 'I really need you to be at this meeting,' she gets there." The company has been creating content for HBO and other channels since 2009. It was through this production company that Parker executive produced the show “Divorce.” The company also produced the feature film “Here and Now.”

Outside of the film industry, Parker also has a partnership with the American Library Association, together they created an online platform called Book Club Central which provides book lists, recommendations and other resources for book clubs and readers. Parker clearly values reading; she also has a partnership with Crown Publishing Group

In 2019, Parker announced a collaboration with the New Zealand winery, Invivo and Co. Together they have created award-winning vintages like the “Invivo X Sarah Jessica Parker Sauvignon Blanc” from Marlborough, New Zealand and the “Invivo X Sarah Jessica Parker Rosé” from Provence.

Matthew Broderick was born in Manhattan, New York City in 1962. He was born to Patricia and James Broderick. His father was an actor and World War II veteran while his mother was a playwright, actress and painter. Broderick went to school in Manhattan and later studied acting at Herbert Berghof Studio where he would sometimes train and perform with his father.

Broderick went on to star in a number of off-Broadway productions that gained him the attention of the New York Times theater critic, Mel Gussow. Broderick talked to 60 Minutes about the occasion. He said, “Before I knew it, I was like this guy in a hot play. And suddenly, all these doors opened. And it's only because Mel Gussow happened to come by right before it closed and happened to like it. It's just amazing. All these things have to line up that are out of your control.”

After gaining attention from the positive review, Broderick went on to star in Neil Simon’s “Brighton Beach Memoirs” for which he won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor. Broderick made his film debut in another of Simon’s works, starring in “Max Dugan Returns” in 1983.

Broderick starred in his most well-known role when he was 23, playing Ferris Bueller in John Hughes’ famous film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” in 1986. The film is a comedy about a high school student who skips school to explore Chicago with his girlfriend and best friend. It was immensely popular with a younger audience and played a large role in making Broderick a household name.

After the success of Ferris Bueller, Broderick went on to star in a number of movies including “Glory” in 1989 in which he performed alongside Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington. Broderick also performed the voice of Simba in the insanely popular children’s film “The Lion King.”

The Disney animated film had a fantastic reception, when it was initially released it earned a worldwide gross of $763 million. It was the highest-grossing film of 1994 and is still the highest-grossing traditional animation film of all time.

In the 1990s Broderick also made his return to Broadway. He won his second Tony Award in the musical “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” He also starred alongside Nathan Lane in Mel Brooks’ stage production of “The Producers” in 2001.

Broderick played the role of Leopold Bloom, who is an accountant that co-produces a musical that is designed to fail, yet succeeds anyway. The Broadway musical was a huge financial and critical success, earning Broderick even more positive reviews.

Throughout the early 2000s, Broderick continued to star in a long list of Broadway productions. In 2019, he made his West End debut in the production of “The Starry Messenger,” which opened to mixed reviews. He was also featured in the television series “Daybreak” that aired in 2019 on Netflix.

Broderick also went on the show “Who Do You Think You Are?” like his wife, to learn more about his ancestry. He discovered that his paternal great-great-grandfather fought in the American Civil War for the Union. This connected Broderick to the role he had previously played in the film, “Glory.”

According to People, Parker and Broderick were married on the lower east side of Manhattan in May of 1997. This made her a newlywed when she played ultimate single-girl, Carrie Bradshaw. The wedding was officiated by Broderick’s sister and was an Episcopalian ceremony. When asked about his long marriage to Parker on Sirius XM’s Radio Andy, Broderick said, “I don't know the secret at all, but I'm very grateful and I love her and it's amazing.” It’s nice to see Broderick so quick to sing his wife’s praises.

Despite playing an infamously single character on television for so long, Parker has a very romantic and idealized view on marriage and relationships. She spoke about marriage to People, as she said, “I think marriage has a lot of vitality. If you’re fortunate, it’s like this dazzling organism.” It’s clear she has something figured out with her almost 25-year marriage to Broderick.

Parker gave a quote to Harper’s Bazaar back in 2013 about her marriage to Broderick, she said ”Call me crazy, but I love him. We can only be in the marriage we are. We're very devoted to our family and our lives. I love our life. I love that he’s the father of my children, and it’s because of him that there’s this whole other world that I love.” Her love for her husband is beautiful to witness.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the couple and their children all live together in Greenwich Village, New York City in a large home that was purchased in 2016. The couple renovated a double-wide property that they bought for $34.5 million.

Parker and Broderick chose architect Morris Adjmi to design their home and garden, which they have in the back of their property. Back in 2015, the couple had sold another home nearby that was worth $18.5 million. The block they currently live on is occupied by other celebrities as well.

The couple welcomed their first child, James, in October of 2002. They had their twin daughters, Marion and Tabitha, via surrogacy in June of 2009. Parker told Today that she loves to read to her kids, she credits this to her mother who had a rule that no one was allowed to leave the house without a book in their possession. This was to encourage the children to read more.

This past October, Parker and Broderick’s son, James, celebrated his 18th birthday. The young man is all grown up and will attend Brown University in the fall. Parker left a sweet message for her son on her personal Instagram account with a heartfelt caption that said:

“October 28th, 2020, My beloved son, James Wilkie, on this day, you are 18 years old. I marvel at the passing of those years but equally the young man you are becoming. My love for you is an ache and an honor. As you leap toward and into your future, I remain your privileged and steadfast confidant and joyful witness to the year ahead. Happy birthday my first-time voter. I love you so. X, Mama.”

Parker mentioned James being a first-time voter in the caption, and from the other posts on her Instagram account, it is clear that being politically active is very important to her. The touching caption was paired with pictures of James as a baby in Parker’s arms and as a young child running around and playing. The entire post is so sweet, and you can feel Parker’s love come through for her son.
