Sandra Bullock Opened Up On Being 'Embarrassed' By Her Role In A Film That 'Makes No Sense'

Sandra Bullock has been a working actress in the entertainment industry since the late 1980s and has also worked as a producer during her impressive and long-lasting career. She is an eclectic actress and doesn't really fit into just one genre since her talents are so unique and diverse. From suspenseful thrillers to romantic comedies, Bullock has starred in a wide variety of films and television shows. Some of her most notable films include "Miss Congeniality," "Ocean's Eight" and "Bird Box." 

She's won several highly-esteemed awards for her roles throughout the years, including an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and three Critics' Choice Movie Awards. She was named the highest-paid actress in the world in both 2010 and 2014, and she was even named one of Time's 100 most influential people in the world. 

Bullock was born on July 26, 1964, in the Washington, DC suburb of Arlington, Virginia. She has one younger sister named Gesine Bullock-Prado, who actually went on to serve as president for Bullock's production company Fortis Films later in life. After graduating in 1982, she went on to attend East Carolina University, where she received her degree in drama. During her time in college, Bullock continued to pursue her passion, both in the classroom and outside, and she performed in a few productions such as "Peter Pan" and "Three Sisters." The hopeful star moved to Manhattan, New York, shortly after and worked as a bartender, cocktail waitress, and coat checker to support herself financially while auditioning for roles.

From a young age, Bullock showed a lot of promise as a smart and successful woman in the entertainment industry, as she pursued her passions both academically and during her personal time. Her impact on the industry has captured the attention of many fans and critics, and the star has earned herself quite the collection of awards and accolades. Although Bullock is praised for her outstanding acting career, the actress has said there was a role that she had been embarrassed to play.

"I have one [that] no one came around to and I'm still embarrassed I was in," Bullock, 57, replied. "It's called 'Speed 2'. I've been very vocal about it. Makes no sense. Slow boat. Slowly going towards an island."

In this older Bullock film, the insane-but-not-stupid character of John Geiger, played by Willem Defoe, sets out to get revenge on the cruise company that he formerly belonged to. It just so happens that he kidnaps and sabotages the cruise ship Bullock's character, Annie Porter, and her boyfriend, played by Jason Patric, are on. Over the course of the movie, the cruise ship, already damaged by the fighting occurring on and in it when Geiger causes chaos and mayhem, is further slowed when the heroes realize the mad Geiger has programmed the autopilot to crash the ship into an oil tanker. It ends up scraping by the tanker and hitting a port town in a spectacular, but ultimately slow-moving fashion.

With Bullock having had her share of box office hits, the star stepped away from the screen in the mid-2000s to become a parent. In Dec. 2021, Bullock opened up about what it's like raising her kids on an episode of "Red Table Talk," the Facebook talk show hosted by Jada Pinkett Smith, her mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris and daughter Willow Smith. Bullock admitted it wasn't always easy. One reason was that Laila was already three when the star adopted her and had some trauma from going through the foster care system. The actress also acknowledged other difficulties she'd had.

Another reason was related to the fact that her children are Black and she is white. Bullock spoke candidly about how she gets worried when she thinks about her kids growing up and going into the world on their own, especially Louis.

The actress opened up once again about her children and the future of her acting career in an interview with Entertainment Tonight in March 2022. As she promoted her movie "The Lost City" alongside Daniel Radcliffe, Bullock revealed that she was going to step back from acting "for a while" in order to be with her "babies" and family. She spoke about taking her work very seriously and that it is a "24/7" job for her, so in order to focus on her family, she has chosen to take a break from acting for an unspecified amount of time.

Taking a hiatus is obviously very important to Bullock, who must have planned the break for some time, as her IMDb page shows that apart from the two films releasing in 2022, she has no upcoming projects, either as an actress or producer. "The Lost City" costars Radcliffe, Channing Tatum and Brad Pitt and will be released on Mar. 25, 2022. Later in 2022, "Bullet Train," which also costars Pitt, is set to be released.

At 57 years old, Bullock has starred in over 50 films and has helped produce over 15 works across film and television. She owns her own production company, Fortis Films, and she even founded her own restaurant based in Austin, Texas. Bullock lived with her late partner, photographer Bryan Randall and they were raising her two children together. Tragically, Randall passed away on Aug. 5, 2023, after a long battle with ALS or Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, as reported by People.
