Sandra Bullock & Nicole Kidman Prove Their 30-Year Friendship Is Truly Magical

Some Hollywood friendships fade when the cameras stop rolling. Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock’s has only grown stronger.
Nearly 30 years after first playing witchy sisters Sally and Gillian Owens in 1998’s “Practical Magic,” the actresses have reunited for “Practical Magic 2” — and their connection off screen appears to be just as powerful as the sisterhood they created on screen.
In a September 2026 PEOPLE cover story, Bullock and Kidman interviewed each other about the friendship they have maintained through decades of career highs, personal changes and heartbreak. When Bullock asked Kidman which memory from working together she would keep if she could choose just one, Kidman had a surprisingly simple answer: “Our quiet conversations.”
Bullock agreed. “This time around, we got to share things,” she said, before describing the two women as “each other’s life raft.”
Their affection for one another is also remarkably unfiltered.
When Kidman asked Bullock about the best compliment they had received from each other, Bullock immediately made her friend laugh by saying: “I said you have a great ass.”
“She’s got a great ass and a nice rack,” Bullock added, while Kidman countered with a compliment of her own: “She has the best skin.”
“You’ve got to see it up close because it is the most beautiful skin,” Kidman continued. “And it’s the softest.”
But beneath the teasing is a friendship that has clearly deepened with age.

When Bullock asked Kidman how her outlook on life had changed, the Australian actress admitted she had once been “incredibly shy” but is now much more open.
Bullock revealed that she, too, had once been “very, very guarded,” but ultimately realized that she simply could not stop herself from loving people.
“I have so much in my body,” she said. “That’s just who I am.”
Kidman responded simply:
“That’s a gift.”
The conversation became even more emotional when they were asked what they admired about each other that the other woman might not hear often enough.
Bullock became tearful as she spoke about Kidman, telling her that she was capable of achieving everything she wanted — and more.
“I don’t think you are told enough that you are here for a very big reason,” Bullock told her friend.
Kidman then turned the compliment back on Bullock.
“And you heal people,” she said. “That’s what you do.”
She continued:
“You’ve got the biggest, biggest heart.”
It is a particularly fitting description of a friendship that has survived almost three decades.
The pair first bonded while making “Practical Magic” in 1997, and their relationship has continued through parenthood, career changes and some of life’s most painful moments. Bullock stepped back from Hollywood to focus on her family and care for her late partner, Bryan Randall, while Kidman has faced the loss of her mother and major changes in her personal life.
Now they are back together as Sally and Gillian Owens in “Practical Magic 2.”
On screen, their characters are sisters bound by magic. Off screen, Bullock and Kidman have something arguably even rarer — a friendship that has lasted long enough to grow, change and become a genuine source of strength for both women.
And after nearly 30 years, their magic still seems to be working.
