Sandra Bullock & Keanu Reeves Had A Crush On Each Other Before Her Troubled Marriage To Jesse James

Actor Keanu Reeves is known for being one of the kindest and most down to earth people in Hollywood. He is incredibly talented and has gone on to become extremely successful and loved by many. Similarly, his previous co-star Sandra Bullock has had a great trajectory with fame and success, as she is an eclectic actress known for her kind heart and spirit.

Reeves is most known for his work on the “Matrix” and “John Wick” action series, but has also shown great depth as an actor in other genres. Bullock shot to stardom with her work in comedies and romantic comedies, such as “Miss Congeniality” and “The Proposal,” but she has also shown how brilliant she is in thriller and action movies, too.

Reeves and Bullock have acted alongside each other a few times and have since developed a great, long-lasting friendship. They both starred in the 1994 film “Speed” together, and teamed up once again for the 2005 film “The Lake House.” 

During their time together, Reeves and Bullock grew to become great friends and have kept that friendship incredibly strong as the years have progressed. They have time and again shown just how much they care for each other and truly value each other.

Even though the pair had a crush on one another after first meeting while filming “Speed,” nothing ever came of it. It turned out that they weren’t aware of how the other was feeling until years later, but by that point Bullock was already in a relationship with Jesse James. While filming “Speed,” Reeves lost one of his dearest friends, River Phoenix, who passed away from a drug overdose. The shooting schedule for the movie was altered, resulting in Reeves having more time to mourn. Speaking with Esquire, Bullock talked about how she was with Reeves during this difficult time. 

She said:

“I watched how Keanu grieved. And oh, did he grieve for his friend. He’s very private, but he couldn’t hide that. And just to see that a man like that was able to grieve. And I remember thinking, God, if that’s the tip of the iceberg of his depth, and his level of love and care for a friend — that just draws you in.”

While there was never a romantic relationship between Bullock and Reeves, the actress did say, “But who knows? Keanu’s a guy who, I feel like, is friends with every woman he’s ever dated. I don’t think there’s anyone who has something horrible to say about him. So maybe we could have survived. I don’t know.”

Harper's Bazaar explained that both Bullock and Reeves had a crush on each other while filming “Speed,” but neither of them ever really acted on it. On top of that, they didn’t even find out until years later.

Looking back at past interviews, it was evident that Bullock and Reeves had a strong connection, and were even giddy just thinking about the possibility that could have been. “She obviously didn’t know I had a crush on her,” Reeves once said.

It may have been potentially possible for Reeves and Bullock to date had they known about each other earlier, but this would not be the case.

After filming "Speed," Bullock was already with James. They were married from 2005 to 2010. In an interview with Barbara Walters, Bullock said that she viewed James as a man that could protect her when previously she had never given anyone else this kind of space in her life. 

Bullock said that, “in a partnership,” no one had ever protected her the way James did, and that he was her “home to come home to.” However, allegations about James cheating on Bullock came to light, and the latter filed for divorce.

CheatSheet reported that James took full responsibility for the betrayal of his marriage and its end. His insecurities got the better of him and he cheated on Bullock a couple of years into their marriage. "It was like a very short bubble…It was hard. I married America’s sweetheart, and she’s one of the biggest stars in the world, but I’m still this f***ed up kid from Long Beach,” he explained.

However, Bullock had been raising her adopted son Louis on her own, and when she finally felt strong enough to care for her family and herself, she gave relationships another chance. “I found the love of my life,” the actress said, speaking about her late partner Bryan Randall. “It’s the best thing ever.”

Tragically, Randall passed away on Aug. 5, 2023, after a long battle with ALS or Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, as reported by People.

Even though Bullock and Reeves never dated, they have shown that they really care for each other and cherish their friendship. While speaking about how she never dated Reeves, Bullock said, “I think we’re probably friends for that long because we didn’t.” Reeves also admitted that he would “love” to work together with Bullock again. Although it seems their time for a potential romantic love has passed, it’s clear that the love and friendship between Reeves and Bullock is still very much alive.
