Sandra Bullock won an MTV Movie Award the other night for Best Frightened Performance for her role in “Bird Box”. Her involvement in the Netflix horror movie hit was inspired by an unlikely place — her kids.

So for that reason, she dedicated the award to her two young children Louis (9) and Laila (7) because to Bullock, “Bird Box” is actually a family film.

Yes, the plot may be about a mysterious killer disease in a post-apocalyptic setting, where Bullock’s character must set out on a risky quest blindfolded while dodging terrifying obstacles. But in the end, it boils down to protecting two kids amid disaster.

In her hilarious acceptance speech, where she likened being a mother to a horror movie, she had an answer for her kids who asked why she never made a movie for them.

“When I finished the film I went to my babies and I said, ‘Here, Mommy made this for you,'” Bullock stated in her speech, “And even though you can’t see it until you’re 21 because, apparently, a movie about being a mommy is a horror film, you will know when you see it that there isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for you.”

Her speech changed tone when she went into the real underlying reason of why she made the movie and what she wanted her kids to learn:

“I wanted you to see what being a family looks like, that sometimes you’re born into a family, sometimes you need to go find it, sometimes it finds you,” Bullock said, “But no matter how it comes together, that when it does, family is what you fight for.”

It was a moving and funny speech both at the same time. It will also be a heartfelt reminder to her kids as they grow older and watch the footage that their mom wanted to share her sentiments with the world.

“I was put on this earth to protect you, you are my world, I love you so much, and I will move mountains to make sure that you are safe,” she said, and “What you saw in that movie is what your mommy would do for you.”

She wrapped up by sharing an anecdote about when Louis asked her to make a movie for them, he actually meant superhero movies. She got laughs from the audience when she shared that he told her, “Those are the films you should be making. Superheroes are the ones doing the important work right now.”

Fans of the original “Bird Box” movie will be delighted to hear that there will be a sequel to the novel that it is based on. The book’s author Josh Malerman recently spoke to Esquire magazine and dropped the news that “Malorie” (The title is based on Bullock’s character’s name) will drop in October.
