Caretakers at the Oceanografic Valencia first noticed the pair's coupling in a unique way, as CNN reports. The two demonstrated the signs of wanting to start a penguin family together, namely, by beginning to nest together.

Gentoo penguins are known to build nests out of stones together when they are ready to start a family, and that is exactly what Electra and Viola began to do together. As the zoo explained in their announcement, the aquarium is home to roughly 25 penguins. Still, Electra and Viola miraculously chose each other as life partners.

What's more, the two decided to do the unthinkable and begin nesting. While the two may not have had much luck attempting to do so in the wild, the aquarium's staff lovingly intervened and provided the couple with a fertile egg from another penguin couple, as CNN reports.

The same-sex pair of penguins were the first in the aquarium to incubate and hatch an adopted egg, according to CNN, though the practice isn't that uncommon.

In support of their happy family, the aquarium has since stated that they are "very proud of the moms." While their caregivers have just as large of a role to play in the formation of their new happy penguin family as the penguin mothers themselves, the aquarium has chosen instead to celebrate the miracle of penguin life and keep the focus on celebrating the lovely penguin couple.

The adorable same-sex penguin couple Electra and Viola have incubated their first egg and successfully adopted their new penguin child. As the aquarium is in full support of this innovative penguin family dynamic, watchers from all around the world will wait with bated breath to see what their penguin family does next.
