Salma Hayek is one of the most successful and gorgeous actresses on the planet, but she actually led a rather humble life in her native Mexico before becoming famous. Having worked on her craft since the age of 18, Hayek's passion for acting eventually propelled her into the entertainment stratosphere in the ‘90s.
Throughout her career, Hayek has been known for being one of the most beautiful actresses in Hollywood, and that hasn’t changed, even as she entered her 50s. The gorgeous star is still as radiant and ravishing as she was in her younger years, while also exuding strength, wisdom, maturity and grace. The 56-year-old actress is still also in incredible shape and still attracts new fans through her work, past and present.
Hayek was best known for playing the beguiling love interest in films such as “Desperado,” “From Dusk Till Dawn” and “Wild Wild West,” but won critical acclaim for her dramatic turn in 2002’s “Frida.” She proved she was more than just a pretty face, nabbing award wins and nominations for her portrayal of Mexican surrealist painter Frida Kahlo.
Not only is Hayek an accomplished actress, but she is a fashion icon and a trendsetter, too.
Dressed by some of the biggest luxury brands and clothing lines in the world, Hayek’s stunning beauty and physique have made her a show-stopping force at red-carpet events and premieres. Her flair for fashion was definitely on show during the premiere of the animated film “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” in New York City in December 2022 and months later at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2023, where she wowed on the red carpet in a show-stopping deep plum-colored gown.
Born on Sept. 2, 1966, in Coatzacoalcos, Mexico, Hayek once described her childhood as being pretty idyllic. Raised by her mother, who was an opera singer, and her father, an oil company executive, she also has one brother.
From the start, Hayek knew that acting was what she was destined to do, so she stuck with her decision. Well, it didn't take long for the decision to pay off — after getting her first part playing Jasmine in a theater production of "Aladdin" for kids, Hayek went on to bigger things, landing her first TV gig in 1988 on "Nuevo Amanecer." The following year she got the titular role in "Teresa," a telenovela that catapulted her to fame at the tender age of 22, making her one of Mexico's biggest soap opera stars.
Now, Hayek is one of the biggest actresses in Hollywood and one of the most prominent Latina actresses of this generation. Like many celebrities, Hayek was well-loved by her fans and the fashion industry, which is why when she was starting in the '90s, a lot of brands were enamored by her alluring beauty and innate capability to wear anything fabulously.
In a video for Vogue Magazine, Hayek took a trip down memory lane and looked back on her own fashion herstory.
“In the beginning of my career, I struggled getting clothes, and I couldn’t afford it. The other girls were getting people to lend them clothes but really, nobody thought a Mexican was going to stick around so why give them a dress? But things have changed since,” she shared.
Described by the publication as an “unsung fashion trailblazer,” Hayek has been very grateful for the designers who have continued to work with her until today.
For the December 2022 red carpet premiere of her film “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” Hayek traded in her usual sultry fare to play princess for a night. She donned a pale blue Alexander McQueen ball gown from its Resort 2023 collection and looked the picture of Hollywood royalty. The gown comprised a fitted and slightly see-through corset top with discernible boning embellished with colorful stones. Attached from the decolletage of the corset were wispy, delicate short sleeves. Meanwhile, the bottom half was a dramatic, floor-length, full tulle skirt reminiscent of Cinderella’s iconic blue ball gown.
Hayek kept her accessories simple, sporting only a few silver rings. Her tousled hair, which included a few blink-and-you’ll-miss-it braids, fell loosely to her shoulders while she opted for a smokey eye and innocuous pink lips. These matched perfectly while also ensuring the highlight of the look remained the sumptuous dress.
Hayek radiated beauty down the red carpet with her mix of elegance, innocence, grace and charm. She was also reunited with her “Desperado” co-star Antonio Banderas, who pulled off a street-smart look comprising a blue leather jacket worn over a red turtleneck, crisp black pants and a pair of black sneakers.
In the film, Hayek reprises her role as Kitty Softpaws, who appeared in the first “Puss in Boots” film in 2011. Apart from Banderas, who voices the main character, other stars who lent their voices to the film include Florence Pugh, Olivia Colman, Ray Winstone, John Mulaney and Wagner Moura. The film follows the exploits of Puss in Boots as he discovers he is down to the last of his nine lives and attempts to live life as a domestic pet before discovering a secret that could restore his lost lives.Salma Hayek (2021), (Karwai Tang/WireImage via Getty Images)
Hayek was back in fine form for the red carpet premiere of the Martin Scorcese film “Killers of The Flower Moon” at the Cannes Film Festival in France on May 20, 2023. Hayek looked like a vision in violet in a plunging V-neck Alexander McQueen gown with high ruffles that ran across her back and shoulders, a cinched waist and a floor-length mermaid skirt. The 56-year-old elevated the look with a stunning diamond necklace, studded earrings, a matching bracelet and rings while putting her best foot forward with her husband of 14 years, business magnate François-Henri Pinault by her side.
Hayek also gave fans a behind-the-scenes look at how the ensemble was put together in some Instagram snaps. One photo showed a team of three women, including one wearing a headscarf, making sure her dress and hair were red-carpet ready. More photos showed an up-close look at Hayek’s make-up palette for the evening, which featured a fairly low-key look with dramatic eyelashes paired with an elegant updo.
Fans were thrilled to be given a sneak peek.
“Love the multiculturalism around you! ❤️” one user commented, while another said, “Love the eyebrows! You are so pretty and fiercely smart… an Amazing lady who inspires us! Cheers!”
Hayek shared more photos from her foray on the red carpet that showed just how well the dress fitted not just her hourglass figure but her timeless yet sultry style as well. “You’re always gorgeous but that look is on the top 5 ever. Flawless and stunning,” one exuberant fan commented as another remarked, “You always kill it. So glamorous.”Salma Hayek (2023), (Marc Piasecki/FilmMagic via Getty Images)
