With a career spanning close to six full decades, it’s no surprise that Field has been honored and recognized for her incredible work and talent over the years. She has been a knockout star in films and television series and has also demonstrated her strengths as a director. On top of that, Field has a beautiful heart of gold and has dedicated time to being an activist.

Field was born on Nov. 8, 1946, in Pasadena, California. Her father served in the military during World War II, and his relationship with Field’s mom – actress Margaret Field – didn’t last.

Her mother later married actor and stuntman Jock Mahoney. As someone surrounded by fame, it’s no surprise that Field went on to establish herself as an outstanding actress. She first starred in television series such as “Gidget” and “The Flying Nun.”

Afterward, she received critical acclaim for her role in “Sybil” and went on to star in a plethora of films. Some of Field’s finest include “Smokey and the Bandit,” “Norma Rae,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” and “Forrest Gump.” Field later returned to television to find even more fame and recognition as she continued her long-lasting wave of success.

Field was married twice in her personal life and had a famous relationship with actor Burt Reynolds from 1976 to 1980. She is also a mother of three, and most of them went on to have careers in the entertainment industry.

Trigger warning: this part contains a short mention of sexual abuse, and readers’ discretion is advised.

Although Sally Field had a fruitful career in the entertainment industry, her life was not easy as she faced a lot of hurdles along the way.

The actress published her memoir in 2018 titled “In Pieces” where she detailed the horrendous experience at the hands of her stepfather.

In the book, as reported by People Magazine, Field alleged that her stepfather, Jock Mahoney, sexually abused her when she was only 14 years old. At the time, she recalled him summoning her into his bedroom alone.

“I felt both a child, helpless, and not a child. Powerful. This was power. And I owned it. But I wanted to be a child — and yet,” an excerpt from the book reads, as obtained by the New York Times. Her mom divorced Mahoney in 1968, and he died in 1989.

Unfortunately, that was not the last time Sally Field encountered a tragic experience as she also revealed in her book that she had abusive experiences with two men in Hollywood, actor Jimmy Webb and director Bob Rafelson

In December 2022, Field appeared in an interview with Andy Cohen on his show “Watch What Happens Live.” During the Q&A segment, in which fans will get a chance to ask questions, one caller asked what her “worst” on-screen kiss was because she previously mentioned that her best one was with James Garner in the film “Murphy’s Romance.”

Field didn’t hesitate to answer to the point that the other guest star on that episode, Idina Menzel, was left stunned.

“This is going to be a shocker, hold on folks,” she warned the host, Menzel, and the viewers at home.

She then answered her former co-star and ex-lover, Burt Reynolds. The “Wicked” actor was so shocked that she started laughing uncontrollably.

“I can go into detail, but you don’t want to hear it,” she initially said, then she revealed that the reason why she didn’t like it was because there was a lot of “drooling.”

Although Field and Reynolds dated for a while, the actress revealed in an interview with Variety that her ex-partner made up the story that she was in love with him.

Years before he passed away in 2018, the actor revealed in his memoir titled “But Enough About Me” that he regretted not pursuing his romance enough with Field back when they were still romantically involved with each other.

In the interview, Field said, “He was not someone I could be around… He was just not good for me in any way.”

According to an article published by the New York Post, Field and Reynolds reportedly began dating in 1977 when they were working on the movie “Smokey and the Bandit.” Their on-and-off relationship lasted until 1982. Throughout their time as a couple, they were able to star in four movies.

“He had somehow invented in his rethinking of everything that I was more important to him than he had thought, but I wasn’t… He just wanted to have the thing he didn’t have. I just didn’t want to deal with that,” she added.

After their breakup, the pair didn’t speak for over three decades, and Field didn’t attend his funeral in 2018, but she still acknowledged their connection in a statement to Page Six at the time.
