Some movie scenes stay with you long after the credits roll, and for many viewers, the funeral scene in “Steel Magnolias” is one of them. It is the kind of moment that feels so real, it almost stops you in your tracks. For Sally Field, it was not just something she performed. It was something she had to live through while filming. Speaking to Parade, the Oscar-winning actress reflected on what it took to bring that scene to life, especially as she stepped into the role of M’Lynn, a mother facing the unimaginable loss of her daughter.
In the film, Julia Roberts plays Shelby, a strong-willed young woman living with type 1 diabetes whose life is cut short after giving birth. The funeral scene that follows is raw and unfiltered, with Field’s character moving through grief in a way many viewers still remember word-for-word. “I want to know why!” she cries out, before shifting into anger and heartbreak in a performance that has only grown more powerful with time. For Field, the emotional weight of that scene stayed with her long after the cameras stopped rolling.
“You don’t just think of it as ‘Oh, it’s just another day at the office,’ ” she said, explaining that moments like that demand something deeper from the actors involved. It was not just about delivering lines. It was about connecting to something real, something that could not be turned on and off as easily as people might assume.

What made “Steel Magnolias” so enduring was not just the heartbreak at its center, but the relationships that carried the story forward. Field recalled how much time and care went into building those connections, especially when casting Roberts for the role of Shelby.
At the time, Roberts was still relatively unknown, and Field had read with many more established actresses before her. But something shifted the moment they worked together.
“Julia had not done very much,” Field told Parade. “I read with a lot of much more established actors, and after I read with Julia, I said, ‘We’re done. We’re done. There she is.’” That instinct would go on to shape one of the film's most memorable performances. Off camera, the cast formed a bond that reflected the closeness of the characters they portrayed. With Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton, Daryl Hannah, and Olympia Dukakis rounding out the ensemble, the group created something that felt genuine, not just on screen but in their time together behind the scenes. Field shared that despite the emotional demands of the story, they found moments of lightness in between.
They spent weekends together, played games, and built a sense of connection that carried into every scene. That closeness is part of what made the film resonate so deeply with audiences, and Field still looks back on it with a sense of gratitude. But even with all of that, she never forgot what it took to get there.
“It takes a part of your soul. It costs you. It cost every one of us,”
she said. And reflecting on the experience as a whole, she added simply,
“It was a once-in-a-lifetime thing.”
