Sailor Son Epically Crashes His Father's 50th Birthday - The Reaction Will Melt Your Heart

By the time Don Beaver turned 50, his son had already been deployed in Bahrain for ten months, serving with the Navy as a member of their police force. He wasn’t expecting his son to return for the event. He wasn’t even expecting the surprise party that his family and friends threw for him. What happened at that party, though, left not a dry eye in the house--not the onlookers, not Don Beaver and not his son.

Video of the birthday bash, which was later uploaded to YouTube, began by focusing on Don as he watched a prerecorded message sent by his son. The young sailor spoke softly as he wished his father a happy birthday and apologized for his absence. The camera spun back to show Don crying after hearing less than half a minute of the heartfelt message, and his son earned plenty of laughter from the gathered crowd when he said, with near perfect timing:

“If I know you, right about now, you’re starting to get all teary eyed.”

As Don explained in a comment on the YouTube video, he became so overwhelmed with emotion, he completely missed his son's final lines, telling him to “turn around and give your son a hug.” He was even oblivious to his son’s entry into the room, as he approached Don from behind, grinning widely.

“Nobody gave anything away by talking," Don said. "I simply didn’t hear the last thing he said on the video. It was my daughter who said ‘turn around and hug your son,’ and, even then, it didn’t register that it was real.”

Because his son had planned the whole visit in secret, requesting leave and flying back into the country just to surprise his dad on his big day. As Don said, later, “The whole 50th party was a surprise, and the last thing I expected was to see him.”

When Don turned to find his son standing directly behind him, he was visibly overcome with emotion but wasted no time in rising to embrace him.

By the end of the video, both men were crying as they hugged, a separation of ten months and thousands of miles coming to an end. Around them, friends and family looked on, cheering, while, in the background, some clever, patriotic soul started playing Toby Keith’s hit song “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue.”

Don ended his comments on YouTube with equal patriotism, saying:

“Thank you, everyone, for the kind words and the likes. God bless our troops! Thank you to everyone who has, is, or will be serving. God Bless America!”
