When Alex Trebek passed away on Nov. 8, 2020, the world was left feeling heartbroken. Actor Ryan Reynolds has since helped carry on some lasting memories of the beloved game show host, as the two were both in the upcoming movie “Free Guy.” While Reynolds is the star of the film, Trebek had a memorable cameo, and the two were able to develop a sweet friendship together during their short time on set and the following phone calls that proceeded.

Trebek was most known and extremely loved for his job as the host of the syndicated game show “Jeopardy!” for an astonishing 37 seasons. During his successful career, Trebek also hosted a few other game shows and even was featured in several films and television shows, although he mostly just made cameos as himself. Before losing his long battle to pancreatic cancer, Trebek continued to be the sweet, kindhearted man he had always been as he continued to make people smile while hosting “Jeopardy!” Trebek’s very last role was a cameo in the film “Free Guy,” starring Reynolds and Jodie Comer.

In an interview from early August 2021 promoting the movie, Reynolds talked about what it was like getting to know Trebek and having him featured in the upcoming movie “Free Guy.” Reynolds is most known for his roles in “Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place,” “The Proposal” and “Green Lantern.” As Reynolds opened up about his companionship with Trebek and what it was like to be in a movie together, he made it clear that Trebek’s legacy will never be forgotten.

While speaking with E! News on Aug. 4, 2021, Reynolds shared some behind-the-scenes details regarding Trebek’s unexpected yet memorable cameo in the upcoming film “Free Guy.” “We shot that separately, actually after the film had been completely done and dusted and completed,” Reynolds revealed. “Alex was kind enough to jump in and do this little cameo for us. I was just so blown away by how sweet he was to do that.”

While getting a chance to be in a film together was a great experience for Reynolds, he had previously developed a budding friendship with the late game show host, and reflected on his final phone call with Trebek prior to his death in November 2020. “Even right up shortly before he passed away, I talked to him on the phone about a charity initiative he was trying to launch,” Reynolds explained. “This guy was really made of good stuff right until the end.”

Reynolds also mentioned that having Trebek featured in the film was “bittersweet,” as Trebek’s presence only added to the overall inspirational message of the movie. “I would say it’s probably my favorite movie I’ve ever done, mostly because I grew up watching Amblin movies about wish fulfillment,” Reynolds said. “I just feel like the last few years have been so hard on so many people, not just in this country but all over the world. It’s great working on and being a part of a movie that is just this unabashed ball of joy.”

“Free Guy” hits theaters on Aug. 13, 2021.
