In front of their Georgian country house nestled in a village in Norfolk, England, four-year-old Charlotte began clapping first, followed by six-year-old George, two-year-old Lewis and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge themselves, according to The Independent. The family was dressed in blue — the color of the Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) — to further honor healthcare staff.

Prince William and Middleton’s special appearance was part of BBC’s The Big Night In TV special, which partnered with Comic Relief, BBC Children in Need and BBC One on Thursday to raise money for charity, offer a bit of home entertainment for families stuck at home and celebrate doctors and nurses in the midst of the healthcare crisis, according to the program’s website. From their Birkhall residence in Scotland, Prince Charles and Camilla also joined the nationwide clap for carers on the television special, according to reporting by The Independent.

The Clap For Our Carers campaign, which began last month, comes after healthcare workers across the world have had to risk their lives to reckon with an overwhelming influx of new coronavirus patients. In an interview with The Guardian, the creator of the Clap For Our Carers campaign, Annemarie Plas, told the paper last month that she was “so grateful” to see her idea spread across the nation. The Dutch citizen, who lives in south London, said she was inspired to start the campaign after seeing footage of similar efforts to thank healthcare workers in France and Spain, according to The Guardian.

Every Thursday as night falls on the UK, millions of Britons participate in Clap For Our Carers from their balconies, backyards, windows and via social media, according to The Guardian. Community members have also joined in with whistles and pots and pans to add to the collective thank you. The campaign was so successful last month that the hashtags #clapforourcarers and #thankyouNHS have trended on social media throughout the country. In honor of Britain's publicly funded healthcare system, buildings across the UK have also turned NHS-blue.

Prince William and Middleton joined this massive national thank you yet again this Thursday on the television charity special, though the Duke also appeared in an impromptu comedy sketch with Stephen Fry before joining his family for the clap, according to The Independent. During the sketch, William said that homeschooling his children has been “a bit of a nightmare, really.”

In what made for a busy day for the Duke and Duchess, the royal family also celebrated their youngest son Prince Louis’ second birthday on Thursday. Along with his birthday announcement on Twitter, the family also posted a photo of the birthday boy painting a rainbow, which has become a symbol of hope across the country during these trying times, according to The Independent.
