Princess Diana was a member of the British royal family and was viewed by many as the people’s princess. She was a doting mother to her two children, Prince William and Prince Harry, and was always caring for them dearly. During her time in the spotlight as a key member of the royal family due to her marriage to Prince Charles, Diana was highly respected for her friendliness, charisma, activism, and charity work. She was also well-known for having an impeccable sense of style.
Once she became the Princess of Wales, Diana took on many royal duties and responsibilities and represented the royal family well at many events and functions across the Commonwealth. As a mother, much of her work centered around the upbringing of children. Diana also worked at balancing life as a mother and an important royal figure, and oftentimes would bring her sons with her during royal outings. She regularly broke royal traditions as she set out to be the type of mother she yearned to be.
Tragically, Princess Diana passed away on Aug. 31, 1997, in a car accident. She was only 36 years old at the time of her passing. Passing away at a young age, the princess left behind her two sons, William and Harry. To this day, Diana is still an iconic figure known around the world. Whether it is one of her daughters-in-law, the Duchess of Cambridge, or the Duchess of Sussex recreating her famous fashion looks – or the world paying tribute to the princess – she is still immensely missed. One photographer, Tim Rooke, said that she was one of the best people to ever be photographed.

Known for her philanthropic efforts, her beauty and grace, and her kind heart, Princess Diana is also known for stunning fashion and photographs. One photographer, who captured the Princess endless times- said she was one of the best to ever be photographed. Talking to Us Weekly in 2020, Rooke said she was a kind person to work with. “She was a very warm person,” he said. “She was great to photograph,” he shared.
The photographer shared that not every person is great at posing or being photographed; however, it was clear that Diana was one of a kind. “Often, what we do can be very boring. It can be someone walking from a car into a doorway. … What the Princess of Wales used to do, she would always just turn before she went into the building, so she’d just look at you at the last second, and it always produced great pictures,” he said.
Rooke went on to say that royals just don’t pose like she did. “I think I did a picture of her, it was on her 36th birthday, which sadly was her last birthday, and she went to the Tate Gallery and there was a reception. She just turned, just before she went in, and it made an absolutely great picture. Whereas now, the younger royals do it slightly differently,” he said. He added, “They tend to talk to the person that’s greeting them, which is, of course only polite, but of course, with her, it was great because you always knew you’d get a picture.”

Being a trendsetter, Princess Diana’s style is still emulated to this day. With her signature coiffed hair, appreciation of bright patterns, admiration for creative necklaces, and ability to make any dress look classy, everyone can admit that Diana was a fashion icon. Many publications, such as Harper's Bazaar, Vanity Fair, Elle, and similar magazines, covered the people's princess' often daring fashion choices in detail while she was still alive. And even decades later, she is still regarded as one of the big fashion icons and style legends of the 20th century. Diana's simple yet elegant style has inspired countless people. Other prominent, younger members of the royal family are still regularly compared to her, such as Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, Lady Louise Windsor, or even her own niece, Kitty Spencer.
She has created styles that are still prominent in 2022. Princess Diana solidified looks such as bike shorts, oversized collars, graphic sweatshirts, polka-dots, mom jeans, overalls, the little black dress, sweater vests, knits, and the gingham pattern.
Kate, Duchess of Cambridge and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, are often Diana’s biggest followers as they emulate her style perfectly. The Telegraph reported that Kate may inherit Diana's famous moniker: "The Duchess, naturally, has been endlessly compared to Diana … all have led to whispers of a new 'People's Princess.'"
A close friend of Diana's and Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, shared that the princess would be so proud of her daughters-in-law. In an interview with People in 2021, Ferguson shared, "If she were sitting with me right now, I know she would say, 'I am so proud of both of my boys and the wonderful wives they have chosen. Because each has got her own voice.'"
