This week marked a very special anniversary for Her Majesty the Queen, as she celebrated 67 years since her Coronation, which took place on June 2, 1953. Queen Elizabeth II acceded to the throne at just 27-years-old, following her father King George VI's death.

To celebrate the occasion, the Royal family posted a throwback photo of the Queen from her Coronation to their official Instagram account.

Accompanying the stunning colorized image of Queen Elizabeth, who is pictured sitting on her throne wearing her crown and donning a flowing fur-lined robe, was a caption that shed light on the history of the event. It stated:

"Today marks the 67th anniversary of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Queen Elizabeth II was crowned on 2 June, 1953 in Westminster Abbey. Her Majesty was the thirty-ninth Sovereign to be crowned at Westminster Abbey, the setting for every Coronation since 1066. Whilst an occasion for celebration, The Queen's Coronation was a solemn, religious ceremony that lasted almost three hours. The service has remained essentially the same for over 1,000 years."

The Queen's white satin Coronation dress was designed by British fashion designer Norman Hartnell, and featured the embroidered emblems of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth in gold and silver thread.

Falling into six distinct parts, the Coronation includes the oath, the anointing, the investiture, which also includes the crowning, the enthronement and the homage. During this process the Queen is anointed with a special oil made of orange, roses, cinnamon, musk and ambergris. While the special anointing oil is made in larger batches to last more than one Coronation, a World War II bomb that struck in May 1941 hit the Deanery and destroyed the phial, therefore a new batch was made especially for Elizabeth's Coronation.

The event was broadcast on television by the BBC, marking a historic moment as the first Coronation to be televised. Since TV was such a recent invention, for many people it was the first time they had watched an event on TV. Out of the UK's population of 36 million people, 27 million tuned in to watch the ceremony, according to The Royal Household's website.

A young woman at only 27-years-old, Queen Elizabeth proved to be popular both domestically and abroad, and in more than six decades as monarch—she is the longest-reigning British monarch in history as well as the longest-reigning living monarch in the world—her popularity has hardly waned. Having travelled more extensively than any other British monarch before her, Her Majesty was also the first to visit South America and the Persian Gulf countries. What's most incredible is that even at 94-years-old today, Queen Elizabeth shows no signs of slowing down. What a truly incredible woman and leader.
