The relationship between King Charles III and Queen Camilla has long drawn public attention, dating back to a controversial affair that occurred while Charles was still married to Princess Diana. After her tragic death in 1996, Charles and Camilla waited two years before making their relationship public. Wanting to protect his sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, who were still young at the time, Charles chose not to remarry until they were adults.
According to Royal UK, Camilla, born the eldest of three siblings, also faced personal hardships. Her younger brother, Mark Shand, passed away in 2014. She attended several schools, including Dumbrells, Queen’s Gate, Mon Fertile in Switzerland, and the Institut Britannique in Paris.
In 1973, Camilla married Brigadier Andrew Parker Bowles. The wedding, held at the Guards Chapel in London, was attended by prominent royals, including Princess Anne and Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. The couple had two children – Thomas and Laura Parker Bowles – before divorcing in 1995.
Camilla and Charles announced their engagement on Feb. 10, 2005. The palace stated she would use the title “HRH The Duchess of Cornwall,” choosing not to adopt the Princess of Wales title out of respect for Diana. The couple wed on Apr. 9, 2005.
After Queen Elizabeth II’s passing in 2022, Camilla became Queen Consort and was later styled Queen Camilla. By 2024, she had fully assumed her role, particularly after Charles’s cancer diagnosis, demonstrating notable strength as a senior member of the royal family.

Since marrying Charles, Camilla has taken on numerous royal duties, serving as a patron or president of several charities and regularly attending events in their support. She also accompanies the King on various public engagements.
In 2022, Camilla guest-edited an issue of Country Life magazine. The process was documented in an hour-long special that aired on Jul. 13, 2022. According to Vanity Fair, other royals – like Princess Anne and King Charles – have also collaborated with Country Life to mark milestone birthdays. For this edition, Camilla invited Princess Catherine to photograph her for the cover.
Though she kept much of the spotlight on others, Camilla contributed an essay honoring Charles as one of her “countryside heroes.” She confessed:
“It’s not easy to write about your husband. I bit through several pencils.”
Despite her schedule, Camilla made time to celebrate her 75th birthday in 2022. She visited a local school to help open a new library. She launched the Duchess’ Birthday Books Project, giving “mini libraries” to 25,000 children at 75 underprivileged elementary schools, according to the Literacy Trust.
ITV reported that Camilla kept her 75th birthday low-key with a small family dinner. Clarence House released elegant portraits on X with the caption:
“Thank you for all your kind messages and well wishes on The Duchess of Cornwall’s 75th birthday today!”
On her 76th birthday, tributes poured in from other royals. Prince William and Princess Catherine posted:
“A very happy birthday to Her Majesty The Queen!”
Harper’s Bazaar noted that Westminster Abbey’s bells rang for the first time since 2019 in her honor.

The year 2024 was quite difficult for Camilla as her husband, Charles, was diagnosed with cancer. Speaking to GB News, royal expert Angela Levin said of her support for the King:
“Supporting him very much, absolutely by his side, is Queen Camilla who is going to all the engagements that they would have gone to together on her own.”
Levin described Camilla as a “very caring” queen who “makes people laugh,” adding she “has gone to as many engagements as possible that King Charles would have done, which is a huge load, but she’ll do it with grace.”
Near Camilla’s 77th birthday in 2024, former BBC Royal correspondent Jennie Bond told OK! Magazine that Camilla seemed to be “rocking” her role as a senior working royal. Bond also suggested that Camilla was putting in the hard work because she wanted her husband to be “proud of her” and to “pull her weight in their partnership.” Bond also said Camilla had “grown immeasurably in confidence.”
On her 77th birthday, the royal family marked the occasion with a social media post, captioned:
“Wishing Her Majesty The Queen a very Happy Birthday today!”
Camilla has played a growing role amid Charles’s cancer treatment. As he scaled back specific duties, Camilla represented the Crown with grace and steadiness. She accompanied the King on several key state visits, including the one to Italy, which coincided with their 20th wedding anniversary on Apr. 9, 2025.
Camilla also stood by the King during Trooping the Colour 2025. After her checkered past, many people around the world are still just beginning to understand Camilla’s full story.
