Roxette Singer Marie Fredriksson Passed Away Aged 61 After 17-Year Battle With Brain Cancer

The founder of Swedish pop duo Roxette has died aged 61 after a 17 year battle with brain cancer. 

She is survived by her husband Mikael Bolyos and their two children, 26-year-old Inez Josefin and 23-year-old Oscar.

Her management company Dimberg Jernberg Management announced Fredrikkson’s death this morning in a statement. 

The singer was first diagnosed with an agressive form of brain cancer in 2002, after suffering a seizure while out on a run with her husband. She then had the tumour removed via surgery and underwent radio- and chemotherapy which left her blind in one eye, limited hearing and unable to speak.

Fredriksson, however, made an impressive recovery and in 2009 was cleared to make a Roxette comeback. 

The pop duo recorded several new albums and went on world tours until 2016 when doctors urged Fredrikkson to stop touring and focus on her health.

Roxette is recognized worldwide for many hits, with It Must Have Been Love and Listen To Your Heart being their most successful.

“Marie leaves us a grand musical legacy,” her management wrote in their statement. “Her amazing voice – both strong and sensitive – and her magical live performances will be remembered by all of us who was lucky enough to witness them. But we also remember a wonderful person with a huge appetite for life, and woman with a very big heart who cared for everybody she met.”
