Ron Howard Opens Up About Marrying His High School Sweetheart 44 Years Ago

Ron Howard an accomplished actor and director gushed about his wife, Cheryl of 44 years. He talked about the secret to their long-lasting marriage, the couple first met in high school and have been together ever since. Howard also revealed the one thing that has made their relationship work all these years.  

“I met her, and there was never anybody else,” movie director Ron Howard said to People of his wife, Cheryl. He talked about how he met her when he was just a junior at John Burroughs High School in Burbank, California. The Oscar-winning director of A Beautiful Mind said there was an "instant connection" between Cheryl and him. The couple married and raised four children together, throughout his incredible career, Howard admires how Cheryl has been a constant support. “She’s unbelievably supportive and always has been,” Howard said, “Our compatibility has endured through all kinds of experiences.”

Howard said "communication" is the key to his 44-year marriage, 

“People say, ‘How’d you do it?’ There’s no technique. There’s no tactic other than communication is really important. You have to learn to communicate and have difficult conversations in constructive ways, beyond that, there’s an element of luck because people either grow together or they don’t and I don’t think you can force that.” 

Howard started acting at a young age; he was only five years old when he played Opie on The Andy Griffith Show. From there grew into the role of Richie Cunningham for the sitcom Happy Days. However, Howard always knew his real calling was behind the camera, not in front of it. Howard told People, “I was an actor who dreamed of being a director.” His dreams came true when Howard received not one but two Oscars for his direction on the 2001 film A Beautiful Mind

The award-winning director's most recent film, Pavarotti, is a documentary about the life of the late Italian opera singer, Luciano Pavarotti. The documentary features never-before-seen footage of the famed tenor, and according to its website, the film will give audiences around the world a stunningly intimate portrait of the most beloved opera singer of all time. Pavarotti arrived in select theatres June 7th, watch the trailer below.
