Rock Thomas On How To Change The Way You See Yourself

Rock Thomas, an inspirational speaker, often speaks about how he overcame labels that others forced on him.

Thomas begins his story by sharing about his life when he was eight. He would wake up each day to feed over 20 horses before he himself could have breakfast.

Growing up in Canada he had to wake up in the dark of the morning to feed horses. Amidst the darkness and the 30 rats that would gather around the barn, one morning Thomas was too afraid.

Asking his dad to help him, his dad replied that Thomas had to go out and do his chores. This was the time that he began to realize his parents weren't exactly supportive.

It was when he turned eight-and-a-half that he was sent to his dad's.

His dad had remarried and relocated to a farm. Now, Brock was the youngest of seven. He learned that the only way to get his dad's attention was to work hard.

At 13 or 14, Brock woke up, knowing that this day was different. This day, his dad would play with him. Brock went up to his dad, telling him it was time to play.

But his response wasn't one Brock hoped for or expected.

"Money doesn't grow on trees. One day you're going to have to work hard for money," his dad replied. Then he told Brock he would have to go and work hard one day and that he had to go play on his own.

As Brock recalls, he never did end up playing with his dad. The only way he could connect with him was by asking him if he needed help around the house.

Though Brock longed for a different relationship with his father, his dad's attitude towards him allowed him to grow.

When Brock was old enough, he left home. He worked on his own, making enough money to travel through Asia and Australia. However, on his way back in Thailand, he realized he lost all his traveler's checks.

Over the years, Brock took a job as an English teacher to make up for what he lost and eventually start a family. When his dad became sick, Brock stepped in at the time, hoping to hear his dad was proud of him, but he still wasn't.

When Brock returned home to Asia to a broken marriage, no job, and totally broke and alone. Forced to move back in with his mom, it wasn't until he got into real estate and met a mentor that his life changed.

"So you've labeled yourself stupid...how do you feel about that?... You've had (poor) programming, but now we're going to change that, and change forever".

In that moment, Brock learned to let go of all his baggage and totally transformed his life.

Brock's mentor had such an incredible impact on him because he taught him how to ignore labels and turn into the strongest version of himself.
