Robin Williams was diagnosed with several illnesses before his passing in 2014. He took his own life which left both the public and his close friends and family devastated, and sent many on a quest for answers. In 2018, his wife and his biographer pointed to the symptoms of his illnesses as what pushed him to his demise.

Robin was a multi-talented actor who could liven up the screen as well as play highly dramatic roles at the flick of a switch. His acting was part of two sides of his personality, Dave Itzkoff’s 2018 book Robin explains, he was “both wildly outgoing and painfully introverted,” as per The Daily Mail.

The book traces his final days and his depression about not being able to remember his lines while filming Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. The make-up artist on set Cheri Minns remembered how he would be sobbing in her arms at the end of each day. “‘I can’t, Cheri. I don’t know how anymore. I don’t know how to be funny’” she stated Robin said in the New York Post.

On top of forgetting words, his wife Susan Williams said his symptoms included anxiety and insomnia. She was adamant that it was not depression that killed him, saying to People that “Depression was one of let’s call it 50 symptoms and it was a small one.” After his death, she looked for the root cause of death and finally found it after his autopsy.

It appeared that Robin suffered from undiagnosed Lewy body dementia, which is a neurodegenerative disease that presents in hallucinations and impairment of motor functions.

Susan remarks that Robin’s doctors did exactly the right things but the disease overtook Robin too quickly. One doctor said that Robin knew he was losing his mind but there was nothing he could do about it.

“This was a very unique case and I pray to God that it will shed some light on Lewy bodies for the millions of people and their loved ones who are suffering with it,” said Susan in People . “Because we didn’t know. He didn’t know.”
