Kate Lyon Osher recently contributed a story to the Huffington Post about why exactly she felt such distress, and shared the moment Robin Williams touched her life in an extraordinary way. She writes that she had never told the story before and it was finally the time and place to do so.

Kate was on a journey. She had been traversing California from LA to Oakland on a quest to scatter her husband Greg’s ashes where he had asked her to. Greg had died by suicide and the quest was not an easy one for her.

At LAX for one of her trips, she found herself having a particularly hard time. She mentions that it is not always easy to get ashes in a Tupperware through security at the airport. But one TSA official was really on a power trip that day. The official disrespectfully threatened her that she would have to throw away the ashes.

Naturally, Kate would react angrily to such a rude request and she said she went “ballistic” and fell “into hysterics.” In the end, an official cop verified the death certificate she carried with her, and would be able to go through. Kate made it to the airport bar and sat crying with a whiskey. It was that moment when a guardian angel came to her side.

She said she heard a soft voice state,

“Miss, I just want to be sure you are OK. I see you are traveling alone, and I saw what happened, and I just really want to be sure you are OK.” Kate wrote in the Huffington Post.

When she looked up she saw the famous actor Robin Williams who had unbelievably taken the time out of his life and check on a crying woman.

Robin walked her through the airport to the gate to the flight that they were both on. On the way, he switched between making Kate laugh with silly impressions and voices, actively listening to her story, and recounting his own experience with mental illness. Kate recounts an abridged version of what he said in her HuffPo article:

“Addiction is a real bitch. Mental illness and depression are the mother of all bitches. I am so sorry for all the pain your husband was in. I’m so sorry for the pain you are in now. But it sounds like you have family and friends and love. And that tips the scale a bit, right?”

Robin Williams was not just a one-of-a-kind talent but he was a one-of-a-kind soul as well. Let your friends and family know about this inspirational moment because this story of kindness is something that should be recounted to everyone.
